Ha, I was just going to say, yes, we do have a lot of crust/gutter punks here in Portland. A lot of them.

Dude, in recent years, it's become pretty crazy. They are very aggressive and in your face and there are parts of the city where you it's impossible to even walk down the sidewalk; there are whole camps and dozens of people just posted up and the only way to get around them is to walk out onto the street.

Oh i know it. that settlement under the west side of the Burnside bridge is a full on encampment. i've spent quite a lot of time around that city and it's always blown my mind that you can pitch a tent virtually anywhere.

one last bit about being asked for **** - never in my entire life would i have thought people would waltz into a place of business and ask people who are working for cash. never would i have imagined such a thing until it happened twice in the last 3 months here.

Yeah, it's really unfortunate. The police do nothing about it, there are laws (not sure if these are still in place) that say/said that people can camp anywhere they want within city limits. My parents neighborhood was overtaken by campers/tents/SUVs/etc. some time back in SE Portland. Luckily, one of their neighbors was a police officer, so she got involved and got them all out. But it gets pretty bad in certain neighborhoods and the city does nothing about it.

Not an add-on but you can just use Shopstyle. It's not real time though.

Richard Sennett, a sociologist, thinks those kinds of cities are the best. The noisy, unruly, and even slightly unsafe cities where people are constantly hawking, screaming, and moving. He calls them "open cities."

TBH, I agree with him. I personally dislike the super safe, planned spaces of suburbia, where you have to have a car and everything feels predictable and homogenized. IMO, cities make for better cultural spaces precisely because they have communities like gutter punks (although many, like San Francisco, are becoming gentrified and homogenized). The existence of gutter punks means a city can be more dissonant and incoherent, and thus offers a more interesting life.
