I've seen seen that detail on vintage work shirts before. I only own the western shirts and can't speak to it's appearance on other RRL shirts. On a vest it's the anchor hole for a pocket watch chain.
thats correct.Just noticed I received access to ChatGPT 4, which understands images. ChatGPT to the rescue:

A buttonhole placket loop...
I have actually used that opening to hold sunglasses . But was curious if it had a different purpose, meaning.
There is, but it's pretty dead.random point, speaking of alternatives, is there a thread for LVC stuff?
I think the original retail was $350 or at least that's what Mr Porter said it was back in December when I got this shirt.I went ahead and ordered this shirt from STAG for $240. The shirt's original retail price was $400, which is a lot for a casual shirt. And that had me wondering ... why do you think they priced this @ $400? What sets this shirt apart from their other shirts that sell for less? Is it the perhaps the special/unusual pattern? You can get very nice jackets from Japanese repro brands for that money. Either the markup is insane on RRL or we (I) simply underestimate how much they invest into research, design.

Also, what's the purpose of the encircled opening. It's there on some but not all shirts. I tried googling my question, but don't know the word for that opening, so can't find relevant results.
I believe it was selling for 400 euros on Ralph's EU/NL site. Other webshops still carrying list a similar price, like here. This webshop charges even more when converting Swiss Francs to USD, but that's probably just Swiss business.I think the original retail was $350 or at least that's what Mr Porter said it was back in December when I got this shirt.
Those holes for watch chain are more common on things like engineer jackets which isn't surprising (since engineer means train engineer). Mr Porter had that shirt listed as "Railman workshirt".
Yo I have those same pants! I love the fitRRL roughout shirt jacket, shirt, HBT utility pants, hat. Tricker's.
