Depends on the producer. It's still one of the world's greatest wine regions, and the best examples are sublime. One other factor is if the producer is a "traditionalist" or a "modernist." In the case of the latter, they try to make the wine into a richer, softer and oakier Napa Valley/Robert Parker style. I prefer the former, but it's a matter of taste.

Had this last night as one of the pairings in a tasting menu. It's 100% Tannat from Uraguay and in the style of a tawny port solara. Very interesting and this was its 17th year in the solara.

Don't agree with South Africa getting bullied into calling it Syrah rather than Shiraz, which should just be the Southern Hemisphere thing, but the juice is good either way.

Delicious. Probably better known for Burgundy but does good work in Beaujolais too.
