Larger versions on the thumbnails in the link, and a few other photos.

As the blogger writes, they are kind of reminiscent of Weegee.

if you have the luck of Kazuo "The Bear" Taoka, you head the largest family in the country (Yamaguchi-Gumi), and despite getting stabbed and shot multiple times you die of old age at 80+

but if you have the bad-luck of his successor Mr Watanabe, you get blown away a couple years into your position as head of Yamaguchi-gumi

who knows what happens to the average foot soldier...I remember when the Japanese govt had that offer for gangsters who wanted to go straight but were missing a digit via yubitsume to have their small toe amputated and sewn onto their pinky stump.

Also, when you look at the tattoos, keep in mind that yakuza don't use one of those newfangled tattoo guns like the rest of you pussies but a plain old-school needle.

Wikipedia has some great articles on yakuza history if you're interested, and they even cover "pearling".

That was Triad (Chinese gangsters) not Yakuza. If you want Yaks check out movies like Miike's Dead or Alive, or to a lesser extent Kitamura's Versus

Hmmmmm...it's hard to tell if Japanese hookers are gotten better or worse over the decades. One of those was a man, right?

As for the tattoos, many of the older generation had them done by hand, but now days most are getting their work done by machine. Even in the past, not all the Yakuza members had tattoos done by hand, the tattoo machine has been popular there since the Americans took over. The guys have always had amazing work, but now the Yakuza women are getting work that is as good, or better than their men. In Korea I rarely see people with tattoos, and when I do see one, it always look like ****. It's nice to go to Japan and see so much great work.
