HI .
I just bought a pair of Alden 990 on eBay (shell cordovan, plain toe blucher), but they are too large.
Now I have to re-sell them :(
BUT, I think the guy who sold them to me did not label them correctly. He wrote that they were "UK 8.5", which confused me, but alright.
Anyway, I tried a pair of this model in a store which were size US 9, and they were perfect. So I guessed that these were US 9 too, but that he just wrote the equiv in UK size.
Well, I was wrong. These must be something like US 9,5 or US 10.
And the markings are worn away. The only thing I can read is that they are width "E".

Can you help me figure out what size these are, so I can label them correctly when I sell them?

Do any of you have a pair of Alden 990 in sizes, say 8,5 to 10,5 that you could measure the length of?

Mine are approx 31,8 cm from heel to toe on the outside of the sole, measured by tape. (that's ca 12.5 inches)

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I am looking to pull the trigger on an Alden cordovan boot. I generally wear an approx 9D in the barrie last chukka I have, but this boot happens to be built on a plaza last and is in 9.5E. I normally measure a 9.5US on a brannock. Given that the plaza is supposed to be closer to standard sizing than the barrie and narrower than a barrie, is it feasible that the 9.5E might be close enough? I want the boot pretty badly and hope it's close enough

Thanks in advance

Probably too wide. Plaza last is not narrow. And a sminch long in my book.

Trubalance last question. I think I know the answer (which is, 'no, don't try it') but wanted to confirm.

I'm a solid US 8.5D-9D in most every shoe (call it a 8.65D). I don't currently own any Aldens. The only somewhat obscure reference point that some here might get is that in the Grenson Masterpiece (91 last - fairly sleek, but not overly so) for Paul Stuart (went nuts back during the Ron Rider/Paul Stuart Extravaganza a couple of years ago), wearing thin Pantherella dress socks, the 8.5D US fits perfectly like a glove and the 9D is comfortably loose. I'm satisfied with the way both sizes fit and have walked miles and miles all over Manhattan in both sizes with no issues.

I know most every recommendation on the Trubalance last is to size down a 1/2 size (in my case, that would be 8D), but I was wondering if anyone has successfully played with the width instead (i.e. maintaining your size but going with a narrower width - in my case, that would be 8.5C). The online shop doesn't have an 8D, but does have an 8.5C. Worth the risk with no refund possible or should I hold out for an 8D? Having trouble finding a shop here in San Diego with a good stock of Trubalance sizes to try them on in an 8D or 8.5C. Thanks in advance.

Do you know of Shoe Mart carries the style you want in your desired size? They have a good selection and return policy. There are a few other Alden stockists with some older models in stock. I can't recall which shops right now.

Guys,

I'm roughly a 7.5D (prob E is better) in Barrie. I have a high instep and measure 8E on the Brannock. Would you recommend 8D or 8E in Plaza?

Also, what is the general sentiment about getting fitted for a (single) last and without intent to purchase? Disrespectful?

I love Aldens but hate feeling obligated to buy when I have no idea which lasts will fit me. I'd like to know for my own knowledge but don't want to irritate the SAs.

I would like a recommendation about sizing for the Plaza and Grant lasts with respect to boots. I have a pair of Alden George boots on the Aberdeen size 10.5 B/D which are a bit tight in the toe and a bit loose in the heel. I have a pair of Alden Perforated Cap Toe Balmoral Oxfords on the Hampton Last size 10 B/D, which are snug but feel like an almost perfect fit. The 986 loafers on the Van last in 10B/D also fit very comfortably. Most European shoes fit me well in size 9.5E (euro sizing) and Allen Edmonds almost always fit best in size 10E.

Any recommendations for me on sizing for Alden boots on either the Plaza or the Grant last?

Thanks.

I don't know about the grant last but I believe your sizing would be the same on the plaza as the Hampton. That's based on sizing info I've gleened from Alden threads.

Thanks for the reply. Do you think one can or should go up half a size for boots v. shoes?

Can one? Maybe.
Should one as a general rule? No.
That's the kind of question you have to answer by trying them on.

Currently my best fitting pair of shoes is a pair of Park Avenues from Allen Edmonds in the 65 last in 11EEE (though the outer toes on my right foot do feel a SLIGHT bit tight against the inside of the shoe) and 11.5E on the Brannock (for reference, the 11.5E in the Park Avenues was too tight).

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might be sized for the Barrie last?

Hi.
If I wanna take a Barry last, but in 'C' width, will I also have to go a half size down?
Thanks

Here is a curve ball; I recently ordered 2 pairs of Alden LWB in size 8.5, allegedly on the Barrie last (one pair of cigar, and one pair of whiskey cordovans). I already own a pair of LWB in color 8 on the commando sole, which fits perfectly. To my surprise, both of the new LWBs are slightly, slightly too small. Reviewing the pictures, it seems like they might be on a different last, or, that my original Color 8 are on a differen last than the Barrie last. What do you guys think?
