Down our neck of the woods we wore them slightly flowing, not neatly squared of arranged, the body of the hanky showing but no edges. This isn't a good pic, but it might give you the idea.

Yes we wore them that way also.. just thrown in, The folded hanky is more a Mod look I think, Yes i may start the throw in look again, I cant fold a hanky to save me life anyway

I use to get in the Front Porch Cafe, South Beach Miami, I would see these Middle aged American Woman immaculate dressed. With Bodies half their aged, fair play to them. Italians are often very well dressed.

Yes, I have always favoured the puff but have recently experimented with others.

^^ i like the puff of a silk hankie, or a simple cotton white one in a TV fold

what i dont like are the "internet gent" method of these overly complex folds that look like you have an easter bouquet growing out of your jacket pocket. they look like an origami experiment gone awry

the other thing I'm not a huge fan of, and it's really common in the current skinhead scene, are the carded hankies where it's stapled to a piece of cardboard. i mean it looks great when worn and I own a few myself, but i just dont like sticking a piece of cardboard into an otherwise nicely tailored suit.

That was how I remember wearing them.Never put a Tie Pin in them-they were Silk!
I have only come across the Term "Hard Mod",recently. We never called ourselves that, only just got on with having our Hair cropped etc.Another Media name,I believe.

Same here. The earliest reference in print I can find is Dick Hebdige's 1979 book 'Subculture'.

I was thinking about the Book, and I wondered why I took the decision to completely change my "Look".It is funny that a small thing can change your outlook!
In `67 a Film was released called "Bonnie and Clyde".I started wearing a Double Breasted Suit, two tone shoes, loud ties etc.My Girlfriend of the time was Italian, she started Midi Skirts and Granny Shoes(this"Look"was replicated 2 years later on Harry J`s "Liquidator"Album-plus a couple of others)Boutiques such as "Granny Takes A Trip" were stocking 20s/30s Style Clothing.Anyway,I liked wearing the Suit intead of coloured Shirts etc. I then noticed the "Cooler"Mod with cropped Hair and Suits.I then knew what I wanted-plus hearing Rocksteady etc.I had already been to the Marquee Club,in Wardour Street,to see the Skatalites. They had as a Support Band "Dr.Syn",so I knew "Flower Power" was not for me.

I remember the Bonnie & Clyde look. I had a double-breasted jacket in 67, but just like you I ditched it in favour of the conservative/modernist look.

Funny you should say that. Browniecj and I were just discussing how it looked great on Robert Redford and crap on us!

Funny that MoM, when we use to write a Mod fanzine in the 80s, just amongst ourselves we termed the 'hard Mods' 'monkey Mods' as opposed to the longer haired, dandier variety (monkey boots, monkey jacket and getting 'monkey' meaning stroppy, with people) it was only later that we discovered the term 'hard Mods' as mentioned in surprise surprise 'Skinhead' by Nick Knight (82)

Did later 60's Mods even call themselves Mods? Most we had spoken to just called themselves 'fashionable'?

They certainly did in the NW. That was why I was surprised when the kids who looked the same down in London didn't.
