Mods, Ivy League, Skinheads, As a Boy I saw it all, But the Smart Skinheads was the smartest of all,
It was a uniform, The Lads that wore the best kit was in a way Elitist, It was down to the the last detail. Dormuiel Mohair, POW, Dog Tooth, Cloth,Crombies, Sheepkins, Harringtons, Faith Royals Brogues, Loathers, Fred Perry, Smedley. American Imports, I could go on .
Not all Skinheads was Smart, But the Smart ones , Was fcuking Smart.

Just to add.. Original Skinheads would not even trust their own Mums to Iron their Kit, Bless our Mums.

My mum's favourite sayings, about 1969 -

'You've got nice clothes on then you spoil it all by wearing those big boots!'

'They've mucked your trousers up at that tailors, they're too short.'

'..and your hair's too short'

'You bloody well iron it then'

'What time do you call this?'

'Put your wooly on'

Poor ol' mum had the same with me ten years later..(I was a Mod)

'You're not having a moped (MOPED!) they're dangerous.'

'Your mate's here on his moped, the one with the big anorak on.'

'You bloody well iron it then'

Etc.........

Bunty that is straight comedy! Reminds me when I was 14. My dad had bought me a Crombie when he was over your side of the pond, and I was always figuring out ways to get money to buy/tailor clothes etc. My hair was probably about #6-8 & I never wore boots as I had a thing for brogues & smoothes, so at that point my family loved the clothing choice & hair that I sported. Anyhoo, I told my dad I wanted my hair "a little shorter", so the next thing is my Dad escorts me to the barber and tells him to give me a military cut, and I was mortified (short on sides but longer on top, over here we call that cut the "jar-head"). The barber starts trimming my wig and about 3 mins before the cut is done my dad goes to the bathroom. I tell the barber something like "hey man, you know what? Since you're cleaning up the sides & back, just use that same clipper and buzz off the top as well. -I'm looking at it and now want it all that same length". My Dad comes out the bathroom and sees that I have a #2 all over and lost his freaking mind! For two weeks I heard commentary like "so, wheres my little P.O.W. going today?"

When I started wearing the 8-holes, the hazing got that much worse! My Dad & I laugh at this **** now because it's just so ******* silly with everyone around cropped & people strolling around with blue mohawks/weird clothes etc., but from like 81-86 (at least in California) this would cause car accidents! I have zero doubt it was exponentially worse in the 60's. In a snarky kind of way I still laugh at the following incident: My boys & I are walking down the street decked out, some normals (driving in a car) that are like 30 years old start up with the whole "you ******* faggots, **** you punk rock bitches, we will ******* kill you here and now" -type ****, and we at that time automatically without even looking at the car grab our packages and stick the fingers up. This causes these dudes to go into FRENZY, just screaming at top lung and they start throwing projectiles at us. Then BAM! They wreck into the car in front of them at a red light! With their car incapacitated, I suspect you know what happened next...

That reminds me so much of an Emo Phillips story. He told of how he was walking down the street and some guys drove by, and they were leaning out of the window of their car shouting at him, "Hey weirdo! Hey geek!" and so on. But they weren't watching where they were going and drove into a street lamp or a tree or something.

Emo goes over to them and says: "You forgot my other nickname... Captain Telekinesis!"

Can you identify the shirts? The yellow one (far left) looks a little bit like the the one my mate bought from the Squire Shop, but it's difficult to see because the photo has faded.

Just a thought, but I would have driven him mad by whistling the theme from The Great Escape until he got fed up with taunting me. It's called 'getting your retaliation in first'.

I don't think I ever saw a pic of young Skinheads like that looking equally smart either.

Only the most dedicated ones of their age would have shopped at the Squire Shop I reckon, especially with the one in the yellow shirt seeming to be the youngest lad. Would certainly be an interesting detail though...

The ones in the middle look 15/16 I'd say, the others more like 13/14...
