The term somewhat spread among watch collectors and today most people who have some interest in watches are called WIS. However only a few have the original pin.

ah, it sounds a lot more majestic than its definition!

i have one question though for watches in general:

how does a 38mm watch fit in comparison to a 42mm watch, in a 6.5" wrist? i am having difficulty deciding sizes, maybe i should stop by a local watch store first, but i would like to see pictures if anyone has them =D

Thats what I did. I went to a store and tried a watch with a 42mm diameter similar to the monster. I ended up liking the look of it and bought the monster, 1 more day till it comes in

I did read most of the many pages here, with several suggestions, but is there a "best price" source for a monster?

I think Amazon has the best prices.

OK.

I went to this site which explains how the Monster bracelet pins work. They consist of a pin with a fixed cap on one end and a removeable collar on the other. Our job is to push the pin out the side of the link, using a tool small enough to fit inside the collar, then push them back together using a tool small enough to fit the hole in the link, but big enough not to slip back into the collar.

Please visit the above-mentioned site for its excellent explanation, details and pictures. I stole some of the visual elements for my diagrams from there as well.

Tools required:

1 Seiko Monster, color of your choice
1 thumbtack
1 small paper clip
1 large paper clip

1. On the inside surface of the link we want to detach, find the engraved arrow, indicating the proper direction of pin removal. The collared end (shown in red below) of the pin is on the side of the link opposite the push direction. Gently insert the thumbtack into the hole and push. This will move the pin a few mm out of the collar; I couldn't push it all the way because the thumbtack gets too thick to pass all the way into the collar.

2. Use the end of small paper clip to push the pin the rest of the way through the link. This assumes our paper clip is small enough to fit inside the collar.

3. We may end up with the collar actually impaled upon the end of our paper clip. Don't panic, just carefully pick it off with a fingernail. The pin should come out one the side of the link and the collar out the other side.

4. Repeat on a second link, in order to excise the proper length of bracelet. Double check the new length against a wrist; if it is wrong, reverse course and choose another link before putting everything back together. Rejoin the ends of the bracelet, and with deft motor control put the collar back in the arrowed side and the pin back in the other. Squeeze them together laterally with fingers or something solid - just enough so they won't fall back out the sides. Then use the thumbtack on the non-collared side and the large paperclip end on the collared side and apply gentle bilateral pressure to push the pin and collar all the way back together.

Please note we use the thumbtack on the non-collared side because the pin cap has a nice concave surface into which the tack-tip fits nicely. The large paper clip must be wide enough to push the edge of the collar without slipping into its grasp.

5. Enjoy the Monster.

Amazon has good prices. That said, from what I have read, Amazon is not an authorized Seiko dealer. As such, those watches may be considered "gray market". They still come with the warranty card and everything. Amazon's regular price on the Black Monster w/ SS strap is $172 (shipped free).

If you want one from an authorized Seiko dealer you may want to consider paying a little more. Bluedial is an authorized Seiko dealer and they sell it for $190, with free 2-day shipping and free adjustment of the watchband to your specific wrist measurements. The price differential is only $18 (arguably less b/c you are getting faster shipping with Bluedial than Amazon, plus Bluedial is doing the bracelet adjustment for you) so you can decide which route you take.

That is still a decent price difference, especially considering that unless specialised vendor-specific tools were required I would never pay for an adjustment or strap change. Anyway, is it mentioned on Amazon.com that they are not authorised?

I just used one of these to remove the pins and then when putting them back I used this + a paperclip to hold the pins from the other side. I kept saying to myself, I wish I had an extra set of hands at this moment.
