Carolina Wildflower. It's a drink I found described in a NYT piece on, among a few other bars, Weegee's Lounge in Chicago, and it's one of theirs, or an approximation thereof. It consists of Bourbon, Benedictine, Elderflower Liqueur (it listed Pur, but I have St. Germain, so I used that), and chocolate bitters. It didn't list proportions, so I used 2:1:1 and two dashes of some homemade molé bitters (cocoa, a little coffee, cinnamon and pepper, plus little pinches of a few other spices). The end result is fairly sweet, but it's an interesting drink. I look forward to playing around with this one a little more.

If you had to pick one core liquor to devote yourself to for cocktails, you could do a lot worse than gin.

edit: now I'm thirsty...

I would add the Gin Ricky and Singapore Sling justforthehelluvit.

Water, of course, but I am at work. Fancy I'll dive straight into the old standard, Laphroiag 10 as soon as I've stepped off the train.

And also dessert-ish drinks, like the original Alexander, and the 20th Century. And we can't forget the White Lady, a gin sour, the Martinez, and....that is all I can think of at the moment.

^ That's the most worked up Huntsman has ever gotten on SF

Yeah well. My father had to have a medical procedure, near to where my partner and I live, so I had my sis down with us, and....it had been a long two days, even though everything went well and my partner was just incredibly supportive. All I wanted was just a little time and a drink before dinner, and it was a struggle to get that. Also I screwed up my Boulevardier, so even it was ******, though I made my partner an amazing Averna drink.

Now, I'm a hundred miles away at my parents, where I had come up to plow out so my father can get in. Totally screwed that up; there is waaaay too much **** out here, the truck is too old, and too much **** went wrong. Had to call a friend to come plow us out in the morning so my father can come home -- we have over 20" and 5' drifts with a layer of ice -- you can't even walk to the house.

So anyway, I'm here alone and I left my freaking keys for the barroom, when I would really love a scotch right now. All I've got is a bottle of Zacapa 23 and about every vermouth you could want. Don't even know what I can do with that besides do the Zacapa on ice. Have never made a rum Manhattan work out.

Hey, no hate--I'm an irascible jerk, and I was just making a remark about your generally unflappable online persona. Best wishes to your dad!

I think you and that bottle of Zapaca will do okay.

^Agreed. One can do worse than a bottle of Zacapa 23. But I can see how it's only sub-par when all you really want is a nice dram of Scotch. Glad everything went well, Hunts.

I'm having a Norwegian Wood now.

1 oz aquavit
1 oz applejack
¾ oz sweet vermouth
¼ oz yellow Chartreuse
1 dash Angostura bitters

May not help Huntsman, but a rum/brandy Vieux Carre (add extra bitters for the missing zip from the rye) can be enjoyable. Very rich.

Oh, no hate at all!!! I am just being bitchy and not minding my diction. I dug the truck out three times after I got stuck three times, ran the truck out of gas once, drained the battery (because, apparently, the alternator isn't charging it), and found out that there is water in the plow hydraulics which predictably froze along with the plow, which, since I can't raise it, is stuck along with the truck in the driveway.

That sounds good. Slummin' with the Zacapa as above, has not been too bad, however. First-world bar problems indeed.

It's quite nice. I've made it with the Gran Matter vermouth (lighter style), which was pretty good. I thought the earthiness and vanilla notes of the Carpano Antica *might* work well, so I've just tried it. It doesn't work too well, the CA is too overpowering imo.

The discussion in the what bottle should I add to my bar thread about St. Germain made me realize that I had the dregs of a bottle that I hadn't touched in a long time. Trying to finish it off.

La Bicyclette -
2 oz gin
1/2 oz Carpano Antica
1/4 oz St. Germain
Dash peach bitters
