Nah, nine's right- Gai-Jin is set in Japan, Tai-pan is set in Hong Kong.

King Rat is a little iffy, since it's a Japanese prison camp, but in Singapore.

I watched the first episode of Sugar (Apple TV)
images

Colin Farrell gets his turn at the Apple money as a private eye in Los Angeles.

Interesting vibe--I suspect this one's gonna get weird (but hopefully in a good way).

I mean I haven't read any of them, but none of them are a true sequel to Shogun...right? They have some Easter eggs and call backs, but its just part of a broader saga and not like any of the stuff that you might expect in a hypothetical S2 of shogun.

(not that I think it needs it...I was just surprised by it ending)

Yeah, no direct sequel, and only two books that even have a Japanese focus.

I saw that Clavell's daughter, the manager of his estate, said that FX expressed interest in some sort of second season, but that it would only happen if they could maintain quality. I doubt that's going to be possible, but who knows?

I'm certain weirdness is coming. I'm caught up and they haven't laid the full reveal on us yet but I have a sense I know where it's going (no spoilers but it's not about the case Sugar is working.) If it goes there I'm out. Plus, we're at episode 5/8 so that leaves 3 more episodes this season for them to resolve (or not) what they're hinting at and then it'll be a year or two before there's another season to flesh it out.

Plus, it pisses me off the episodes are only half an hour and they drip it out once weekly. I'm at the point where I'm convinced short-form 'serial' shows, especially ones with limited episodes (not the same as a 'limited series'-- I mean 8-10 versus traditional 22 or so) should be dropped at once for bingeability. If only I had the discipline to wait....
