So I am thinking of a beater watch that I can bang around.
Anyone have any thoughts on the Sinn 556A shown below:
I am not really looking for a poor man's Explorer 1 or Tudor Ranger.
I guess I want something that is the right size (it is 38.5mm) for me that will take a beating and look classic for pretty much ever.
For the price (~$1K), it just seems unbeatable.

That one was recently reviewed on W&W: http://wornandwound.com/2014/08/20/sinn-556i-review/

I like the stick marker dial 556. Not crazy about the hands though.

But if you prefer numerals, how about a Hamilton Khaki Field 38mm auto?

I have one of those Hamilton Khaki Fields....only complaint now is a little bit of a cluttered dial but it takes a beating.

Get out of here!
Damn, she is a beauty.
Too scared of fakes and frankens to even remotely consider looking for one from over here.

Yes she is. Unfortunately not mine - but a good friend's. I'm a fan of RubberB and how comfortable they are, but I understand why others prefer Rolex sports watches on their OEM bracelets. The juxtaposition of old (vintage 1680) and new (RubberB) on this pairing can also be jarring. I do quite like how the slim red on the rubber strap picks up the red letters though.

Agreed....kind of "jarring" as frilly said, but somehow yes, I think it works.

Hard to make a Red Sub look bad!

Another one of those "bucket list" watches.

@bkotsko - you could do a whole lot worse than that Sinn.

I'm not an owner, but I've heard/read plenty of good things.

I used to own one of these, and I got tired of the dated look with the big numbers. Sinn does make a quality product, but they are getting expensive for what they are.

I would go with the 556i in this range:

This and the U1 are highly original designs that work. The rest, meh.

I'm thinking of getting a leather and/or suede strap for my Explorer 1 but don't know where to start. Has anyone seen any particular straps or materials that look good with an Explorer?
