After considerable thought (ok, 10-15 seconds), I can state definitively that the right answer is, not a clue.

I tend to find that my favorite Aldens are the pair on my feet.

King Wing Day Tomorrow
Good Morning Gentlemen,

Tomorrow is officially King Wing Day, in honor of one of our critical forefathers, Uncle Mac. For those of you who have the pleasure of knowing Uncle Mac, he was the foundation of this thread and forum for years, he was known for his kindness and community, impeccable shines, untouchable models (many where MTO, back in the day), argyles, and his pavers. Please rock your Color #8 LWB or whatever you have closest to it! Uncle Mac would be proud of you all!

I collect wingtips – they are my favorite shoe by far! I have four pairs of Crockett & Jones (black, dark brown, navy blue, and chestnut – all scotch grain with Vibram soles), two pairs of cordovan Alden Longwings, a pair of Alfred Sargents, and the latest member, a pair of Heinrich Dinkelackers. The Alden’s in a barrie last are the best fitting shoe I own.

Recently I bought a pair of Alden 981 LHS Penny Loafers from the Alden store in San Francisco, while looking through their site, I saw a pair of color 8 cordovan longwings that have a modest commando sole that looks like Vibram, but it also has a partial leather outsole. When I saw them, I was so disappointed that I had already bought a traditional pair from the Shoe Mart – as it turns out, this is a special version of this shoe that the SF store has made for them – you won’t find it anywhere else. For someone like me that wears jeans and chinos most of the time, with untucked dress shirt from Untuckit, these are without question the most unique and cool wing tips I’ve ever seen. I’m thinking about selling my current color 8 pair and picking these up instead – but that would be down the line, I get paid once a month and I’ve already bought a pair of Aldens and JM Weston loafers in the last 30 days – my cc’s need a break.

I had never ordered from the SF store before; I think their product pictures are great and WAY better than the Shoe Mart. I called them before ordering because I wanted to see if they thought the 981 in 11E would work, my Alden longwings are 10.5 EEE, I was nervous, but the 11E 981 is perfect. I worked with a salesperson named Jim Smith who was fantastic – he knows the product line well. I ordered on a Thursday and had them by the following Monday – very happy!
