1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

People are debating the merits of physical vs. digital books; what books they're reading currently; the values of cyberpunk; etc; in the Recent Purchases thread, Hardly the place, no?

Well at least you are reading something, unlike most other 10 year olds these days.

Off topic banter is obviously going to occur in thread but three pages worth of book banter gets old. "Thread drift" is easily the worst part of styleforum.

Still no need to be a dick about it, and many others were seemingly enjoying the discussion.

Since my recent purchase was a Kindle Paperwhite, I am going to keep talking about it for another post lol.

Reading on the kindle is nothing like looking at a computer screen. I too am on computer all day, and didn't really ever want to read at night on iPad, and my eyes would get tired when I did read on it. Kindle isn't like that at all, my eyes don't get tired until it's time for me to fall asleep. Footnotes/endnotes are way better, as is reading longer/bigger books (iQ84, Team of Rivals, and yes, IJ are all much easier to handle and read on an e-reader). Also I can't check email/twitter/internet on it, like I could on iPad (and did all the time).

I also like regular paper books, always have, and probably always will. Doesn't mean I don't like the Kindle though. As recent purchases go, it's a total highlight. This is my first e-reader (other than using iPad as one), I got it because I had a bunch of amazon gift cards, and I love it way more than I thought I would.

I loved nearly all of the Iain Banks books, but couldn't get into his 'M' books at all.

I gave up after Speaker for the Dead, and would have been happier if I'd just read Ender's Game.

Anyone else a J G Ballard fan? Drowned World is one of his stand-outs for me.

Hells yes. I love the way he seems to excell at everything, from the early science fiction (I read High Rise), to the experimental stuff (Atrocity Exhibition is a fave), to the more I-don't-know-what (Crash, another favorite). I've been wondering what to read next...will definitely pick up Drowned World.
