So.... I am thinking of making a foray into a 'nicer' pair of shoes (own AE, RL Blue Label English made, Grenson).

EG and GG are both going to be in my neck of the woods. As much as I would like to try both, I am not that flush unfortunately.

I may get to both eventually but as the first, am looking on some opinions to decide on one or the other. I have gleaned some stuff from different threads but as always, more information is always better. Basically an informal poll with as much information folks care to provide.

your decision should be based on what model of shoes captures your heart.

Differences between leather quality, finish...etc are academic, at best. Go with what's most pretty to you.

My suggestion would be to find your size in each of the makers' lasts that appeal to you. Some may be uncomfortable or unwearable in any size.

Sorry, I think they're actually Blue Label shoes. Made by C&J if I remember my anthology right but it was some time ago that I got them.

right off the top of my mind, G&Gs have great shoes. finish, leather, and construction is top notch. love their beveled waist. really elegant but the lasts can be a bit too sleek for some. they do have blunter lasts, but i dont know about the fit of those.

EG is a great shoe too. waist is not that bevellled but i love their lasts more. 606, 82, 888 ,etc are all great lasts. their colors are much better too than G&Gs typical riojas, and mochas, and redwoods and so forth. there is more variegation in the EG polished colors.

Compare fit and style of specific models of each

Then consider detailing possibilities, quality and costs of EG MTO or TD vs G&G

The G&G shoes I have handled - a limited selection in HK Lane Crawford - were finished better than EG. But the EG lasts are far more elegant in my opinion.
