They say powerful business people look at your shoes first. Since you can't see logos on dress shoes, what do they look for? To me, some of the expensive shoes look no different than cheap ones and some of the ones I thought looked expensive were rather cheap.

I'm not sure how your comment relates in any way to his question. He was asking how does somebody tell if another person is wearing nice shoes or not.

Exactly. Expensive does not equal nice. Nor is the same shoe nice to you as it is to me.

As a powerful person, I generally have my minions look at people's shoes for me.

You can see big differences in leather quality but I think it's mostly shape. Shoes that are well cared for always stand out.

Care of details, natural leathers, handmade, shadows and differences of tones.

I know this probably isn't the right word, but I can often look at the depth of the leather, as in how rich the finish looks, and get an idea, along with the shape, construction and sole.

I keep the price tags and use packaging tape to secure then to the toe.

This way everyone knows my shoes are expensive. Quality: no... expensive: yes!

The easiest way to tell is to look at the price tag.

I have business cards made up with the price tag of my shoes on the reverse. One set of business cards per shoe. Then I tape one to the toe of each shoe before heading out in the morning.

The same way you know a horsehide jacket blows away a cowhide jacket.

Devotees of any hobby develop a keen eye for quality. Most horologist can detect franken watches at several meters.
