Where to buy shoes in London

Hello everybody,

I'm studying for half a year about 1.5h away from London in a small town and I'm not from the UK. I need to buy classic leather shoes for a consulting internship with a top firm. I can't do this here, so I need to buy them in London. However, I don't really know where to go. Could anybody suggest me a few places, where they have a selection of lower priced leather shoes? As it is only an internship (3 months) I don't want to spend too much money on them, maybe a 100 pounds.

Best,

Matt

Try Charles Tyrwhitt or Loake. They both have shops on Jermyn St, where you may also ogle shoes from the more expensive end of the market.

eta: (Loake's shop is in the Prince's Arcade, just off Jermyn St, where I think Barker also have a shop which may be worth a look)

Honestly, if you go Loake, for £195 you can get something from the 1880 line which will be more than 2x the shoe compared to anything else they sell.

Good luck.

I doubt you'll find anything for £100 but if you can double that you will get something that will last you a long time.

I'd recommend a visit to John Rushton in Wimpole Street. He often has end of the line etc reductions: http://johnrushtonshoes.com

Both Charles Tyrwhitt and Loake do shoes around £100

True though that spending a bit more will get you something much better, as often in life.

If you are looking for something on the lower side of 100 pounds try Office on Carnaby Street. They are by no means the same quality as Charles Tyrwhitt but they do offer a wide range at a competitive price. I confess to still having a pair of blue suede shoes I picked up there during my apprenticeship on Savile row which I break out every so often when the weather permits. Probably not what you are looking for but they've worn well.

For the money you're looking at, Tyrwhitt (loads of branches but the biggest's on Jermyn St (Green Park tube)) or Discount Shoes on Strutton Ground, off Victoria Street (Victoria or St James Park tube). Not been Discount Shoes in ages but they've always had a plenty of cheaper Loakes and Barkers, amongst other things.

Thanks so much for all your fast replies! I appreciate it a lot!

I have been to Charles Tyrwhitt and their selection is very small, too small to find something for me...

I have had a look at the Loake’s too. All their shoes are Goodyear welted, which is something I don’t need. I will buy one pair of their 1880, just to compare it to the second pair I want to buy.
This second pair, however, should really only cost me 80-100 pounds. They don’t need to be Goodyear welted, just nice looking leather shoes. Something like these from Jones Bootmakers: Jones Bootmaker Oliver Lace-Ups (http://www.jonesbootmaker.com/catalog?params=fh_location=//catalog01/en_GB/categories<{catalog01_mens}%2fpr_productgroup%3E{formalshoes}%2fpr_color%3E{black}%26fh_user_date%3d20140213%26fh_lister_pos%3d23%26fh_refview%3dlister%26user_time%3d02131342%26fh_sort%3d-pr_sale%26fh_user_date%3d20140213%26channel%3dDesktop%26fh_secondid%3d2725217511)
Probably I’m looking for an ordinary, big shoe store which sells plenty of leather shoes. Something very simple. It doesn’t need to be a special insider’s tip (though I’d take that too…). But as I’m not from London and I won’t have the time to search for such a shop for days, I have no clue where to start looking. Any ideas on that?

PS: Jones Bootmakers have many stores in London, but I wouldn’t know which one is the best for me (biggest choice for leather shoes). Does somebody know?
