Authentic Vicuna coat as a TV prop? Heck, they couldn't even afford to have the real Houdini as a character...

It is such an awesome coat from a terrific show, worn by a great actor. I think you will never regret keeping it, but you will surely regret selling it. Enjoy!

i'll end this discussion.

gents, i was in peru for christmas and went fabric shopping and also met the live animals. i went with locals to posh places and then to a village market. At the cheapest place vicuna fabric starts at $1200 a meter up to $2000 depending on the weight. And this is from cheap local mills, not loro piana. very few shops even sell it due to the complete lack of demand.

sure its very fine etc. but the real reason for this price is not so much the quality but the lack of wool the animal produces. something like a meter per animal every 3years. They are also small and pretty useless for carrying or any other domesticated chores. Hence their sole function is this, which makes them unpopular with locals. they were endangered at some point as well.

the alpaca on the other hand is a furry creature and also in the llama family but a more robust animal. in the end i bought what is known as baby alpaca fabric. this ranges from $60-$200 a meter depending on quality, weight and where you get it. the "baby" description actually refers to the very first coat of fur the alpaca produces after which it becomes a lot thicker and coarser. Between baby and adult, the difference is very noticeable, normal alpaca fabric can be had at around $10 a meter but it feels like a burlap sack.

having held both in my hands simultaneously, the touch and feel of the baby alpaca compared to the vicuna is entirely unnoticeable unless you have them right next to each other.
Even then the villager would bring out another swatch of fabric and ask "vicuna or baby?" and sometimes i would guess vicuna and sometimes baby alpaca.... in fact he only had one swatch of vicuna, he said he paid $30 for the 2in by 2in swatch which is a ton of $$$ over there.

so... from my experiences, there is no way anyone would buy vicuna for a tv show unless it was a scientific documentary. i would also doubt that any tailor not a specialist in alpaca fabrics would be able to tell the difference.

No way in hell they would use vicuna for a prop when it looks the same as other fabrics on the screen.

I am probably older than you.

I have a Vicuna Coat from this movie

A lady paid for it, and William Holden gave it to me.

It is a size 42R, do you want to trade?
