I have only worn the 1-ply cashmere, the heavier and chunkier ones are too much for me.

Embrace the chunk! My current favorite is a 6-ply cashmere from Scott & Charters:

Today I’m wearing a silk/alpaca blend from Inis Meain:

Honestly I have never found one that would fit, most of the heavier knits only go to XL or 44 which just doesn't cut it. Plus, as a big guy, I don't typically like to add more bulk to the frame.

That said if anyone knows where I can get one in a 50" chest I would be open to trying one out.

Good points. I imagine it is hard to find one in that size with the quality you'd want. I typically end up buying the largest size available and I'm not anywhere close to a 50" chest.

I get the idea of not adding bulk. If you found a chunky knit that had enough volume to be slightly oversized, the bulk could be a bit camouflaging and can definitely look very balanced with a good fitting pair of jeans and boots.

@dieworkwear Great timing on this article! I haven't had a chance to click through all the links, but I've been looking to get a couple turtlenecks … my first in decades. I'm thinking one should be a little chunky, but I'm worried it will be too heavy for most days. What I'm leaning toward is one of the Camoshita lightweight ones with the more relaxed collar. Any thoughts?

I laughed at the opening and closing paragraphs, and the Kermit picture.

I'm a walking sweatbox so I can't wear any of the chunky ones, ever.

That thin J. Crew one was a nice inclusion. I've read some people wear cotton turtlenecks with nothing underneath and I may have to try that.

Those look good too. I don't have any experience with Camoshita turtlenecks, but I have one of their knitted shirts and really like it.

I find I mostly wear the chunky ones, but I can see how those would be too warm for where you live. In the Bay Area, it has to be in the low 60s or below for me to wear one. FWIW, the one time I met Will from A Suitable Wardrobe, he was wearing a brown flannel suit with a thin merino turtleneck. I thought he looked really good.

Thanks Derek! I'm gonna give each a go. The article offers a lot to digest which is very helpful … I particularly like the Kermit fit. ;)

Every now & then Howlin’ releases geelong or merino brushed turtlenecks that are really lightweight and might work. I didn’t get a chance to check out DoppiaAs turtlenecks at NMWA but maybe @gdl203 can say if they’re relatively thin...

The one time I met Will he was also wearing a thin turtleneck, and I also thought he looked really good.

Thanks so much! Yeah, the ones from DoppiaA are on my wish list for a heavier option (edit: just noticed I also saved a couple in the fine gauge). For the lighter ones I've got some from Camoshita and Ikiji saved. The Ikiji chest measurements seem really small though … I don't have muscles enough to do a tight fit ;)

I love my thin Geelong ESK turtlenecks under a corduroy shirt for that 70s vibe, and everything on up to my ultra chunky John Sterner. It’s got to be damn cold for chunky ones because the last thing I want to do is have to take it off at work.

I have a couple of Cabourn 4 way roll necks. Sadly never wear them; they're way too warm.

I wear my light weight merinos all the time in the autumn and winter, though. Several times a week. Mostly darker colours, but want to branch out to a red and burgundy one. Also might have to buy some from Berg&Berg or Rubato. Love how the neck part is thick and voluminous. It adds some masculinity. Rubato also has a nice cropped fit. Looks equally good under a sports jacket as on it's own.
