Forgot to say as well, if you're taking a 50, you might find lots of the Saint Laurent leathers disappointing. I'm between 48 and 50, and struggled at Saint Laurent to get any leathers that were my style that were not too big looking in 50, or too small to wear comfortably / without looking small in 48.

The more I look through his work there the more disaffected I'm becoming with the stuff at Celine, although I really like some of it too. I like the Celine calfskin one, but I'm not seeing much love for it in this thread.
Out of the 29 leather jackets on the webstore right now, only 3 are biker jackets.
Also, I suspect the cutting of the shoulders might play a role in giving a softer impression on them. I feel like the Saint Laurent jackets were cut with fitted shoulders in mind. The Celine jackets might have a more sloping shoulder unless you size down more than intended, like Hedi does. The Celine ones might also have larger lapels compared to the Saint Laurent ones. Also I feel like the Celine ones are thinner and washed which gives off a more relaxing/vintage feeling than the Saint Laurent version. I don't think there is a right or wrong, as long as you feel informed on your decision on which you like.

The runway styling looks slightly oversized at the shoulders

This was the only biker jacket styled with more fitted shoulders

Subtle differences compared to fw13. Shoulders very fitted by comparison. Tight fitting even. The model's shoulders might be larger than the jacket's shoulders. Feels more uptight than effortless chic.

Oh hey man, I saw your post in the SLP thread where you mentioned this. I've got some muscle on me, so I sorta doubted it would appear oversized on me, but that is definitely a worry. I found this pic that I thought did not look that good. In my opinion, you want a rider to be really slim, and I'm sure you agree. The arms here look particularly bad.

Yes, I've been rigorously going through teh second hand market for SLP leathers from Hedi's reign. The more I look through his work there the more disaffected I'm becoming with the stuff at Celine, although I really like some of it too. I think that collared aviator that Bryan posted would be straight up my alley if it fit snugly. But, in direct contradiction to this impulse, I also am tempted by an aggressive looking biker, but one at the less aggressive end of the spectrum. I like the Celine calfskin one, but I'm not seeing much love for it in this thread.

Those pictures you've shown there are far closer to the reality of this jacket in my experience, I was expecting a sleek high armholed, cropped affair, as illustrated on the catwalk, and I actually think that is crucial to pulling off the look of this jacket; it's not supposed to convey that relaxed louche attitude, to me it's dark, glam 70's so should have a more androgynous feel closer to how female jackets fit, I'm thinking Bowie, Bolan etc.

I imagine if you're 6'+ it might look decent with some sizing down, though. Personally I wish Celine did some smaller sizes as it would allow me to get a closer fit on some of the more generous jackets as I quite like a lot of the designs; for me at a thin 5' 8" it's easy to get swallowed up with less fitted garments. I suppose/hope we might be moving towards more combined men's/women's collections so that would facilitate a full run of sizes in unisex collections...

Back in the 2000s, guys into skinny jeans had to shop at the women's section. How do you feel about wearing women's jackets? I always felt like Hedi cut jackets pretty unisex. Here are some women's jackets that I wouldn't necessarily think "womenswear".

Yeah, I've definitely been looking at L01's and L17's. If I were to go for a biker, I'd like to be able to dress up with it (trousers instead of/in addition to jeans, button downs instead of/in addition to t-shirts). This may be irrational, but I really want a leather jacket with zippered cuffs for some reason. I'm actually looking at Dior ones too, which have a minimalistic look to them that I think would work well in more dressed up looks.

Thorns has me somewhat sold on the Celine ones.

I actually have a Vaccarello leather from a few seasons ago in size 48. I really like the fit, but it is really snug, borderline small. I feel like you and I must have really similar proportions in the upper body.

Yeah I think you're onto something, I do have a couple of women's jackets from Saint Laurent (fringed/suede leather) which is ideal for me in terms of arm/body length and narrower fit. Just need to be aware of things like darts for the chest or jackets fastening the opposite way, not that it really matters but it's difficult to let go of the idea of masculine/feminine features.

Very commendable that Hedi made sure the jackets were cut unisex since at Saint Laurent. Fastening is consistent with the "traditionally male" way and I don't think any women's jackets were set to fasten in the "traditionally women's" way. But I understand the stigma with wearing women's clothing. I've seen people feel more comfortable wearing a slightly ill-fitting man's jacket than a more fitting women's version.

The idea that women's buttons being on the non-dominant hand side, because people helped women wear their clothes back in the day, is kind of insane in 2020. They dress themselves, there is no reason they shouldn't have the button placement similar to men's jackets.

Yeah it is crazy in 2020, but I quite like little anachronistic touches like that, things like how we had cigarette lighters in cars long after anyone was using them primarily for that or saying 'rewind' on digital media, a save icon that looks like a floppy disk or to bring it back to clothes, the way a biker jacket has the asymmetric fastening to make it easier to zip with one hand while on the bike (I think?) (edit - it's actually to create an overlap to stop wind) it's a bit of history embodied in the garment.

I’ve been giving this a lot of thought recently, maybe I should just also consider giving a women’s leather blouson a shot. Aside from the ones which I’ve liked with Celine (but am not able to get) maybe a women’s would be what I want. They are typically shorter/cropped, but with longer arms and I’m willing to be they would be very slim fitting on my torso which is exactly what I’d want.

I don't know, except for outlying builds, I would be very hesitant to go with a woman's jacket... especially paying retail. And I 100% agree with those who are saying the SLP riders are superior to those from Celine. And there are several bangers to pick from: L17, SS14 multizip (or black white check multizip if you are feeling zany), FW 14 studded, SS15 with the fringes... to name a few. I find it hard to believe that between models and sizing, you can't find exactly what you would want.

I will say though, one of the guys here, Zedibee maybe, posted a pic of the black and white first season Celine, and he had it looking good styled.

I think the Saint Laurent jackets I've referenced look quite distinct from the Celine ones, but the ss16 jackets feel reminiscent in "energy" to the Celine ones. They're thinner and washed to give a very relaxed feeling. I can't imagine L01 or L17 paired for ss16 would look as perfect. It would just be a clash of energy. I think as long as the leather jacket fits the look you're going for, there can never be a wrong choice.

Washed thin leather jackets also featured in fw16 in more dressed up looks.

Hedi has shown that thin washed leather jackets to be quite versatile...but it is still not my first choice for a perfecto personally. I'm more of a fan of the L01 and L17 more substantial style over the washed thin leather ones as they feel more luxe. However I can imagine there would be occasions where a thin washed one would be nice to have for more effortless chic looks.

I picked up this Saint Laurent women's shearling and loved every detail except the body was much too cropped for me. I think the closest men's alternative is the bad lieutenant bomber but wasn't loving the black ribbing.

Big fan of the cropped look. Super slim silhouette + cropped jacket just feels so edgy, and makes your legs look long. Too bad the trend has moved on. Even back then, read on the forums that customers complained and they uncropped and compromised Hedi's vision just to sell products. Disappointed, but it is what it is.
