@hoodog ehh been to plenty of those shows, not my cup of tea. Those dudes do play real well though, I respect them. Just like I respect slayer they are the best at what they do but I can only tolerate it for 10mins.

It's an acquired taste for sure. You need to have ears that are "tuned in" to that kind of music to appreciate it.

Sure, but reached notoriety , as well as establishing the archetypical sound, with the second wave. Never liked the first wave stuff myself, too much heavy metal.

Yeah don't want to start an attribution war as everything flows from something else but I thought most classified venom, bathory and al as proto black metal (I also heard first wave so no arguing here). This isn't an insult btw, hey The Stooges are proto-punk and they're awesome.

The Fenriz presents compilation is pretty sweet if anyone wants a compilation of early stuff.

Thom Yorke has pretty good taste (he djs sometimes, he had a set last PFW) but I guess I forgot about the band, wasn't my scene I guess (makes me think of car commercials) but yeah, it belongs in a "big stuff in the 90s" so should have been included.

Anyone was into 90s R&B? some pretty big acts too...

Earplugs: I bring them everywhere. Earasers are the best sounding off the shelf brand, though they might not block as much sound as they should for rock shows. My custom ones from the ENT doc have been unbeatable for sound and protection, though other people don't like that type for various reasons (perceived sound, $$$$). Either way, protect yourself, y'all.

The loudest shows I've seen are my bloody valentine and swans. Earplugs are not enough at a swans show.

Fashion: I'm in Ashe County NC this weekend and it's still 2005 out here. West Jefferson has two boot/Carhartt type stores and a camping clothing store on main street, plus a guitar shop. Old guys with questionable facial hair abound.

I saw Michael Gira play in a church, sound was pretty sweet but yeah. The old lech was coming on to a friend after the show, he's creepy.

I think by now if I haven't come around to Radiohead I never will. I can't stand listening to Thom Yorke mumble his way through another song. Which is odd because I'm usually very forgiving with music, I can still listen to stuff I don't like much, but just can't with Radiohead.

90s R&B has aged surprisingly well even though, at the time, it seemed like the hollowing out of a once great genre. or maybe i've fully entered the empty nostalgia phase of middle age.

otoh i find Radiohead impossible to enjoy even though I once loved them. I have a few friends who are still big fans and I got roped into going to a concert maybe four or five years ago. I was incredibly bored
