Almost any album is going to have its high points (the song you selected isnt one of them) but that doesnt make the whole album hot.

Rap is not my thing but I definitely respect Jay-Z.

Maybe he's devoting a lot more time to his businesses and other interests than to his personal music production.

I accept that

Obviously good rapping if not somewhat pretensions. Still, nothing compared to his older work, which is why I consider AG subpar. Taken separately from his catalog it is a pretty good album.

There is a BIG difference between a WACK album and one with a wack track or two.

You can't judge every album by Reasonable Doubt standard. Too high.

That song American Dreamin' had a nice sample to it. Kind of an old school feelin to it. American Gangster wasn't such a bad album.

The Black Album holds up better than any of his other albums all the way through, IMO.

He and Nas are both hit or miss. Jay is lazy lyrically, Nas has godawful taste in production. I'm still dreaming of an all-Preemo Nas comeback.

nas does have terrible taste in production but that's the guy's prerogative. totally excusable when even his worst produced tracks (the cross, we will survive, sly fox, money over bullshit, carry on tradition) have lines/verses that make you go goddamn and then of course there's the minimalist masterpieces like one mic and last real ***** alive... also "live ***** rap" but the genius of that one can be attributed more to prodigy and havoc than nas, i think that stupid "i know i can" song with the kids singing is ******* inexcusable tho

his newer stuff isn't even actually that questionable but you don't really get into it until after hella listening, which wasn't necessarily the case with illmatic

honestly i disregard nas' production so much that for a good six months or so, my blunt-smoking music was acapella nas tracks although there are exceptions too. i thought that "hope" acapella track off HHID was particularly good; then i heard the original unreleased one with the instrumental and liked that even better ( ) if anyone wants to check it out

since we're talking about premo...
Nas Firmly Committed to Pissing Off DJ Premier After being informed by his weed carriers that Premier thinks his beat selection is ******, your favorite gangsta rapper Nas decided to brag about doing a song for Dr. Dre’s mysterious album, Detox. He then proceeded to crown Dre (not DJ Premier) as the greatest producer of all time. “I did a joint. I think it’s crazy,” Nas says of his potential contribution to Detox. “[Dr. Dre's] someone I’d love to do a whole album with one day. He’s incredible. I think he’s the best producer of all time.” [HipHopDX] Hey Nas, Primo is the greatest producer of all time. Clearly, this is written in the dictionary.
man, dre just keeps producing the same three beats over and over again i think the reason nas has such ****** taste in production is that he's high all the time. has anyone seen an interview or been to a show where he wasn't entirely blitzed and mumbling? he was mumbling on the o'reilly factor for god's sake. it's a miracle he can get it together and sound as lucid as he does on his tracks

Like the beat and everything that is not Jay-Z or Drake rapping. The second verse is a bit better than 1 and 3 but it's just ok. Would rather hear Gucci Mane, Jeezy, Young Buck, or Rawsss on this beat, haha guess that says something about my taste in rap these days too...
