Hello all, I hope everyone is getting over storm Doris and you are all safe and well.
I recently had an email from one of the guys at Styleforum asking me for details about Wildsmith and I promised to post a reply to this fantastic forum which you will find below. Please feel free to ask my any questions in the thread, I am here to help.
The name Wildsmith has a great history of shoemaking. Established long before most of the English shoemakers in 1847, it became famous for supplying King George the VI with a stout house-shoe design that we now know as the loafer.
After many years of supplying a distinguished clientele including english royalty, President JF Kennedy and celebrities including Cary Grant and David Niven, Wildsmith had slipped from the limelight. Thankfully this historic shoemaker has been acquired by Herring Shoes, a well respected English brand with over 50 years of their own history, who intend to put Wildsmith back centre stage.
Adrian Herring, owner of Herring Shoes explains;
"I have always had a keen interest in the Wildsmith story so when I heard it was for sale I was keen to acquire the business and give it a fresh injection on the design front, whilst maintaining a strong emphasis on tradition, especially where the famous loafer is concerned. I want to share the unique heritage of Wildsmith with as many people as I can, because the history and craftsmanship synonymous with Wildsmith is still alive and well in the UK, and I want future generations to be able to enjoy it.”
The new range will all be made in the UK with welted construction and fine leather uppers. Shoes will range between £275 and £400 at launch and will be a fitting tribute to John Wildsmith who is credited with the iconic quote, “You are either in your bed or in your shoes, so it pays to invest in both.”
