I really like the color.  I'm eventually going to get a pair dark brown in something.

This is the same pair in indirect sunlight (the sun does hit the left shoe a bit):

Just curious - what part of LA are you from?

I've been in South Pasadena for the last year, but moving to Monterey Park next week. It's about a 45 minute drive from here, but not too inconvenient. I wish they would open a store in Burbank or somewhere near Pasadena.

Yeah, I've worked with 3 of their main guys, including the store manager and they are all good guys. Alex, Byron and Dan are good people.

Long time lurker and reader, first time posting in the thread.

I work in a pretty conservative business casual environment that requires dressing in a suit every few months. My first pair of Allen Edmonds was a merlot Park Avenue (got it on clearance in July). I absolutely loved them and wanted to replace my other work shoes (cheap shoes) with more AEs.

I just picked up a bourbon Carlyle from AE's ebay store and I am breaking them in. I have a dilemma for the next pair: I see a pair of Rutledges on ebay in my size in dark brown that would immediately go to every day work shoe. Or should I save my money and get a Hopkinson (most likely in black) to replace my PAs as a suit shoe, and then use the PA for every day work.

Any feedback or suggestions? Would love to hear from more experienced members.

Rutledges. Immediately. Not available anymore, will pair with anything, best style and last AE makes, independence leather, and a killer price. Don't overthink it.

Ah cool, I've been getting more familiar with the LA area since I worked there for a few years. Back out in El Segundo now for work, but live in Torrance. Good to hear, thanks a lot for the info! I'm sure I'll be picking your brain more often, as I go deeper down the rabbit hole.

Thanks for the input. I really liked the style of the Rutledge, but I was not sure about the price. It is at $300 right now, but it is new. Any thoughts if that is too high or something I should just try and go after?

Edited - I forgot to say those look amazing! I believe those are the brown? That is the color that the ones I am looking at as well.

Alright my fellow shoe nerds, I have multiple questions I'd love your opinions on.

A few pages ago I asked about a dress boot with Dainite soles for the treacherous Pennsylvania Poconos winters. I spoke with one of the phone agents from AE today and they also informed me that I could do a custom mini-lug sole.

My questions are:

1) For weather that makes the roads, sidewalks, and environment suck the big one would the Dainite or lug sole be better?

2) When ordering a custom item, can you still do something in bourbon or has that ship sailed?

3) what is everyone's thought on the Dalton?

1. I would prefer the mini lug sole for those conditions.
2. The bourbon ship has sailed.
3. Everyone loves the Dalton, especially in oxblood.

Not me! I find the vamp oddly too long, and the wing tips too far to the side on the toe. When I used to have a pair, looking down always reminded me of Dan Akyroid from Coneheads.

1. Lug Sole would be the better choice over Dainite for the winter in PA. Thought this link is helpful to read. http://leathershoereview.com/comparing-shoe-sole-options/
2. As the other mentioned this. It sailed.
3. I love my oxblood Dalton! It's my first AE pair ever, and haven't regret it.

Ok, follow-up question. How does the 511 last compare to the 65? I'm typically a 10 D on the 65 last with the exception of my park aves where I'm a 9.5D. With the added room in the toe box for the 511 last what would you gents recommend?

511 is shorter, but wider. I wear 8 D in 511 and 7.5 E in the 65. I find the arch in the 511 usually fits true to size, but the toe area is smaller than the 65 and the heel is wider.

Rutledges without a doubt. The Hopkinson will be around for a while.

Also, please rotate your shoes, as good as the Rutledges look, please don't wear the Rutledge EVERY day. That'll wear out the shoe more quickly per wear than if you rotate it and store it with shoe trees. Unless you meant that you're like most of us here, and have 10+ pairs of "every day" work shoes...

Thanks for the reply. I am currently breaking in the Carlyle to replace a cheap shoe that I already rotate. The Rutledge (and possibly Hopkinson since it will go on sale later) will factor into the rotation.

My original plan was to start with the Carlyle and Rutledge. Then when I get the Hopkinson, I would move the PA down to the work rotation. At that point I would probably be broke haha

Anyone know what color these are? Description on ebay said "brown" bit they seem lighter than the average brown Allen Edmonds shoes. Or maybe it's just the light in the pic.

@Newberry OK, it took some digging to find your 6265 shoes. From the Fall 1986 AE catalog, the 6265 is the Chestnut Polished Cobbler McAllister. They are technically "brown" but chestnut is a lighter shade of brown. AE no longer makes chestnut polish and the closest substitute is walnut. They discontinued this shoe in 1989.

Wow! Nice job and thanks. I saw them for $50 on ebay and was curious about the color. You answered my question and even gave me the history of the model. Thanks!
