I'm learning that everything was different with vintage shoes. Mason advertised the "Velvet-Eez Air Cushion insole" pretty heavily. Nowadays cushioned insoles are commonplace even in GYW dress shoes. I have a cheap pair of GYW MiIndia Bostonian PTBs that I bought a while ago. The insole feels like a sponge. Very, very soft. The Mason foam, while still providing some impact mitigation, is very firm and supportive. Add that to the heavy double sole, and you get much better groundfeel than the mushiness of the single-soled Bostonians. Vintage is king. Speaking of which, I'll be making the rounds at area thrift shops today. Hoping for good luck!

1970s Florsheim captoes. These were made for Florsheim stores. The quality is not the same as their other shoes. It has a fiber insole and the leather is not nearly as nice. Still, the hallmark tight stitching on the uppers is there and it provides a fantastic accent. I dyed these moccasin brown. The dye turned the stitching mustard yellow. I like the look.

Wow! Just wow! It's one of the best patinas on shell I've ever seen!

Agreed. It has that marbling effect. AE's current trunk show is offering black marble shell.... to no one's surprise, one of our members is ahead of the fashion curve.

I wanted to run with the big dogs in the VINTAGE DRESS SHOE APPRECIATION, TIPS, MAINTENANCE AND ADVICE thread so I got me a pair of 93602's... vintage-like.

I'm cleaning them up, as you do, and I noticed that the insoles have peeled and curled up a bit.

Question for the big dogs: In this scenario, do you (i) tear out the insoles and replace them with new ones or (ii) glue the insoles back in place?

If the latter, what kind of glue would you recommend?

I have had this in several pairs and I have found it can be handled quickly with just good ol' rubber cement. Thin coat on both surfaces and then stick it back down. If that sounds impractical, shoot some pictures and post them.

Depending on their condition, usually best to glue them back down.

If the insoles have curled, it'd be good to rehydrate them and flatten them out in between sheets of waxed paper and an iron at low heat. Then glue them back down as has been suggested by others.
