Coming over from the CM forums for some advice. I'd really like to kick up my casual game because I'm sure I look like an old dad in these pics (and I'm not a dad, so you can imagine why that's not a good thing). I have to start somewhere so I'll just jump right in. Critiques?

I'll bite: your instincts are good, you just need to refine it a bit. Start with the leather as a base. Ditch the graphic t-shirt and get a darker grey or black, non-graphic t-shirt. Blue jeans don't really work here, try grey or black denim. Those shoes are way too dressy for this casual fit, instead look for something more basic like an engineer's boot...you can check out Red Wing's, Fryes or similar brands.

The problem is the individual pieces are fine but they don't mesh well when put together. Simpler is better in this instance. My 2c.

Edit: Also, don't cuff your pants, get them hemmed if you need it.

If you want to dress with style, you're going to have to calibrate your tastes a little. Browse the forum and lurk this thread. If you like leather jackets then maybe focus on that because you can solve a lot of problems with one really nice leather. To be honest, you're way ahead of the curve just by starting out with an open mind. This particular fit there isn't much to work with because the pieces are all sort of bad and there's really no way around that. (no idea why this text shows up as a link. Wasn't intentional.)

Caustic Man - the boots are fine, but uncuff the jeans and wear them lower. They're not trousers.

That's a good point.

True, I don't really know enough to know what I like at this point. I will keep my eyes open.

I'm not a fan of mixing black and brown. I've seen it done and it can work, but it's difficult IMO.

I'm not either in a CM sense. I can't imagine that I would like it any better in a SW&D sense.

Gruff please stop giving bad advice. They're just wingtip boots. They're fine. He doesn't need engineer boots (wtf?). If he's gonna buy something else, get service boots, much easier to wear.
