We are proud to announce a new label to Blue Owl - "The West is Dead." Fall 2011 is the first collection produced by "The West is Dead" and when we first viewed the collection we were blown away by the fabrics, high level of construction, refreshing colors, and fit. The label is based in the USA and uses all USA production. Our first shipment will arrive in just a few weeks and we will go into much more detail once we have some product in store, but for now, enjoy looking at the photos from "The West is Dead" fall winter 2011 look book. The name comes from a poem: "The West is dead. You may loose a sweetheart, but you will never forget her." Charles M. Russel, 1864-1926

The West is Dead is a collaboration of two friends- Will Cheng and Kaelen McCrane who realized they shared an appreciation for denim and a concern for the dying tradition of American craftsman ship. Together they started a men's premium denim line with inspiration drawn from vintage clothing, each piece in the collection was designed and built with emphasis on the functional construction, subtle styling, and an obsession with using only the finest quality raw materials.

I will get more into the denims once I have some in store and can really analyze them. I probably willl only carry their raw denims, but their washes seem to be subtle and fairly well done.

What I see more in their immediate strengths are the non-denims which will make them stand out more as a label. Their price points are really good for a 100% USA made label, their knits are very well done, the colors are quite refreshing, and their fits are pretty well spot on. It will be interesting to see the label grow over the next several seasons.

The West is Dead: "Herringbone 3-End French Terry" Classic Crew Neck Sweatshirt

Our first shipment from The West is Dead has arrived. When we first viewed The West is Dead's fall/winter 2011 collection, we were initially attracted to the label because of their choices of colors and their slim modern fits with an obvious influence of vintage goods. When we looked closer at the collection we realized that one of their many strengths were their basics because of their emphasis of using custom made fabrics and their solid construction. Here is The West is Dead's take on the classic crew neck sweatshirt.

This is the West is Dead's take on the classic crew neck sweatshirt. The fabric is a 3-end French terry, heavy slub-back fabric in a herringbone weave. Its woven on vintage looms in South Carolina, in a district that is famous for producing authentic true-vintage knits. The entire piece is sewn using flat-lock stitching so its fully reversible and with each side you get a completely different look and feel. Here is where the fabric shows its versatility: the face is a flat textured, 50/50 cotton-poly blend, so it takes the dye in a unique heathered pattern. The back slub side is 100 percent cotton and has a beautiful slubby texture, after a few washes the herringbone weave begins to emerge and gives the sweatshirt an interesting hand and a comfortable worn look. A few inches to the overall length have been added to avoid boxiness and finished it off with double Vs in the front and back collar. The West is Dead: The West is Dead "Slim Tapered" 10oz Cotton Duck Canvas Pant

The West is Dead's take on the classic chino uses a 10oz cotton duck canvas which goes through 3 completely different wash processes to add weight and soften the hand. The fabric is lightweight enough for everyday wear and the nature of duck twill gives it the perfect amount of structure. The fit is designed with comfort in mind to allow for additional room in the lower hip giving the extra fabric needed to keep your pants from riding up when you're walking, bending or leaning, but they won’t sag when you're standing tall. The fit is truly slim as they taper from the thigh down to a narrow leg opening. Bottom line: these are comfortable pants fit for any occasion. West is Dead: Duck Pants (detail shots) We have had a couple of customers ask about the back pockets on the West is Dead duck pants. On the right you'll find a traditional single welt and on the left a flap that’s shaped and sized so you can tuck it in if you like. Here are a couple pictures of the moss and gold dust colors with the flap out and then tucked.

The West is Dead's hooded parka uses a heathered 3-end French terry, heavy slub-back fabric which is durable and soft to the touch. This is the same fabric which is used on their classic crewneck sweatshirt. The fabric is incredible by itself, but what really made these pieces stand out are the colors. The barn red is a vibrant shade of red, yet easy on the eyes making it easy to wear and refreshing. The antique black has a great amount of character as well. Just in from West is Dead.....spring summer 2012 collection slim tapered ducks. This season we have added 2 new colors to our stock for a total of 5 color options. We now carry Rust Beetle Red and Ash Grey which are the new addtions and restocks of Gold Dust, Charcoal, and Moss.
