Any recommendations for a tailor in NYC who can alter pants? I haven’t been happy with Wazin’s work (and have a real bad taste in my mouth after trying his MTM jeans which were atrocious, supposed to be repaired, and ended up ghosted)

I've used Stanton Tailor and Tailoring Room both in LES within a few minutes walk of each other. It's been a while since I've last gone but depending on the alteration, Stanton Tailor may be able to do it on the spot. Tailoring Room was generally ~1-2 weeks depending on how busy they are.

Will self edge hem jeans not purchased from them?
Yes, but will be slightly more $.

I have to reach out to them then. I’ve been meaning to get 2 pairs of jeans hemmed, and I’ll be in New York next week - perhaps they can mail it back to me.

if one of the denim is Italian denim, would you recommend getting chain stitching or whatever it’s called?

Can anyone recommend a tailor or cobbler who can alter braces/suspenders? I’ve asked a few alterations tailors and haven’t found any luck.
Bumping this for any additional thoughts.

Gave Tiecrafters a try but they explained it would be costly and they couldn’t do it without replacing the leather straps for some reason…

Tried LeatherSpa and was quoted $120+ which didn’t seem worth it.

Being on the shorter side, the issue id like to correct is primarily due to the elastic being too long in the back with higher rise trousers.

Maybe try Laura and Melinda tailor shop on the Lower East; I last used them many years ago, but they seem to be under the same ownership.

You might give Fulton Cobbler Shoe Repair in Bed Stuy a call. The guys do good work based on recent experience, and would have experience working with leather and elastic.

Any recommendations on spot that works on knitwear? In NYC. Thanks!

Does anyone know of a good tailor that can handle denim in Manhattan?

Self Edge uses Stanton Tailor.
Denim Therapy

I'll add that the only reason to go to a denim specialist is if you want to preserve a selvedge hem while tapering, you want to repair old denim, or you want to make some sashiko-style patchwork out of your old jeans. And maybe hem jobs or seat adjustments (not sure).

Otherwise, a decent enough tailor can do the work same as with trousers and, provided they have access to a chainstitch machine, they can provide a finish similar to the original hem, or even reinstall the original hem (if distressed). The Tailoring Room has access to a chainstitch machine.

Your post was pretty enlightening. I thought I was the only annoying one when I came to tailoring. I always feel that maybe I'm a bit too fastidious and that the tailors are all right. Your post highlights exactly the same type of issues I run into with tailors in NYC. I use 2 tailors who are not that great and don't really listen to what I want. Sometimes their work is perfect - other times it comes out worse and I wish I never touched it. I sometimes take things that tailor-1 screwed up to tailor-2 to fix. And visa versa. I've been there before - spending $450 on tailoring still not getting back exactly what needed to be done and is why I spend all my time trying to find rtw stuff that just fits.

I'm on my third with The Tailoring Room. I've been most pleased with their work thus far. I spent alot at Wazin the past couple years and just didn't feel I was getting what I was paying for. However, I will be the first to own that many things I brought him to correct for my weight gain, and Sam was mostly realistic about how much could be let out (still took the work though).

Ardian's Tailor I like but didn't quite feel I was getting attention to detail, at least for the smaller volume of work I brought him for a couple years. Reasonable prices.

Tailoring Room perhaps benefits from correction of two failings of Wazin and Ardian's, where there is more than one tailor at work (Ardian) and those working on your garments are visible and acknowledged, being semi-front-of-house as they are (Wazin).

Tailoring Room.

Interested in this. I got an S&M suit that needs functioning buttonholes. How much should I be expecting to be charged for this?

Perhaps I'm spilling tea, but the machines for sewing buttonholes are $20k a pop and so most if not all the tailors in NYC outsource to a place in the garment district that can afford this capital. I'd therefore go for the place with the least cost, which is likely Tailoring Room (or Ardian's, although not sure if he sends there).

----------

I swear I'm not a shill for Tailoring Room.

I’ve also switched from Wazin to Tailoring Room. I have given them a number of sports coats and trousers and have been very pleased.

Spot on, my tailor just told me to go to Garment District as they are all using the same company there do it and charge even on top of that. Anyone knows the name of the company? Tailor didn't remember...

many tailors use Jonathan embroidery on 38th st.
a civilian cant go there, because the jacket has to be set up for the buttonholes. and then finished.

you can find used machines for a few thousand, as long as you have a good mechanic.

Just purchased a new suit for my best friends wedding, and was going to take it to Wazin for some work, after reading a bit of this thread feel a little weary… is Tailoring Room the new go to?

For what it’s worth, the work would be; taking in suit jacket, altering jacket sleeves slightly, tapering and hemming pants, adding suspender buttons and possibly removing beltloops/adding side adjusters.
