The strange thing is when the asking party gets annoyed and looks at me as if I am somehow playing out an intricate joke where I will help the next person, come back and say "Just kidding, I do work here". They then proceed the eye me suspicously for around 10 minutes until it is clear that I do not work there.
We were in the Gap on like 18th & 5th last weekend looking for some stuff for the boy and a couple walks in minutes after we'd walked in and started asking me for help. I think I scarred her for life. She and her husband walked away with a terrified look. It was awesome!
That gives me an idea... I'll do that next time and see how far i can take it
A few years ago, I was standing outside a hospital when a car with a young couple and an infant pulled up. The mother looked to be struggling to get her baby out of the car, so I naturally assisted her. I was puzzled when she didn't offer to take the baby back. I figured out that she must have confused me with the non-existent staff. Knowing the procedures inside-out, I helped her check in - the staff knew me well, figured out what was going on (or assumed they were friends of mine) and smiled. Only after her husband returned (who had managed to park the car by then) did they realize I was just being helpful. Nice couple and nice baby - elevated fever, runny nose and a cough. I came down with a cold the next morning.
