This reminds me of a transatlantic flight I made last year where the lady next to me reclined and the 6'5''ish guy behind her flipped the ****. They made a huge scene yelling at each other for not getting business class seats and it took the flight attendant 5min to calm them down. The worst part was both parties had their children with them...

It is really weird what flying does to people. In normal circumstances, people tend to act somewhat rationally. Never on airplanes. What a bunch of heathens.

I was flying from New York to DC the other day. A little kid (~2 or 3) was excited about the flight and was talking fairly loud. Most people smiled, but one asshole turns around and asks the mother to quite the child (as if you can reason with a 2 year old).

I thought it was funny/sad, especially on a 45 minute flight.

I just flew SFO to Zurich and a little kid behind me sing 50% of the way. I said nothing.... but I would have appreciated if the parents would have attempted to distract the lil' guy.

I always tell the windows and middle seat to feel free to wake me up if they need to get out. I hate that feeling of being trapped when I have those seats.

This is why noise canceling headphones are worth every penny.

Better then crying. And like the poster above said, an excellent reason to invest in decent headphones. You don't need noise canceling ones, a pair of decent in ear earbuds works just fine.

If I need to fully recline, I normally take it in two stages so the person behind me isn't too put out.

I hate it when the person in front of me slams back without any regard for my space.

I always check behind me to see if there is room for me to recline. I believe this is basic courtesy that some of you have forgotten.

I have no problem sleeping on long flights, as a general rule. I returned to Atlanta from Madrid a month ago and had no problems sleeping.

As far as airplane etiquette, I think that international flights call for at least business class tickets for comfort, if nothing else. Nonetheless, I always check with the person behind me when reclining to ensure that I'm not making them uncomfortable.

I pay for the reclining feature, so do you. If you wanted more space, you should pay for business class. Especially on international flights where people want to sleep, and you pretty much know for a fact the seat in front is getting reclined.

I will recline slowly to make sure you can keep things from getting crushed, but reclining is my right as a paying customer. If you're sitting in coach, then there's no sympathy. You knew what you were getting when you bought the ticket. There is a reason it's cheaper, and everyone back there is uncomfortable to some extent. You're not a special flower, if you wanted to be one that's what first class is for. But I'm going to mitigate that discomfort on longer flights, feel free to do the same.

I recline when I feel the need to and I don't complain when others feel the need to.

thats a dumb question to ask, what do you do when the person behind you answers NO its not all right if you recline your seat, youre not going to recline then?

If they answer no you tell them that next time they fly they need to buy the seat in front of them too. At that point you recline your seat anyway.

A bit off topic but Swiss biz class GVA-JFK food poisoned me last Friday. Nice experience. I've also noticed I sleep better in the back of the plane, less distractions or something. Weird.
