A hard case allows you to pack more, not less than a soft sided case. It allows more flexibility, not less.
GoRuck GR3. Largest allowable carry on size. It was my only luggage on a 3 week trip.
Having my hands free while going over cobbles was the greatest.

I'm on the record as saying that hard cases are great until they aren't. If they case is hit while open, and twists on the hinges, or if a single clasp fails, you are pretty stuck. The polycarbonate ones can also get cracked on impact.

Sure. Everything works until it doesn't. Zippers fail far more often than clasps. Fabric tears, get infiltrated, zippers too. There are pros and cons, risks and preferences to everything (otherwise there would only be one winning product standing, right?) but on the topic of packing the most in a specific allowed volume, hard cases beat soft. The amount of pressure that can be applied to press the clothes into a hard case just cannot be replicated with soft cases.

Yeah, I don't disagree with this. Also, ime, airlines are less likely to make you weigh your hardcase, and find that you are 20 lbs overweight. lol. Only Airitalia though. For a pretty disorganized airline, they really do enforce that one single rule pretty strictly and consistently.

I have this knife and have owned a few things from The James Brand. Really good stuff.

I think it may be a cultural thing with Italians, not just Alitalia. Every time I check in Malpensa, the agent wants to weigh my carry-on. Doesn't matter if Alitalia, Delta, Emirates, etc... it must be a thing there

Since you all are talking about knives, here’s what I have. I’m a fan of spear point blades, especially the Al Mar designs for SERE from the ‘80s. The Benchmade 530 is super low profile and light, and the fixed blade knife from Tops goes on my pack belt for when I’m stalked by mountain lions.

Aluminum cases are very durable. Scratches and bumps are just that, cosmetic marks. They should be ignored (or if you're a patina fetishist, celebrated). I know people who travel all the time and still have the same aluminum for 20 years. All dinged and scratched, yes.

Zero Halliburton it is.

However, even provided your statements above, I still sense I might not be able to pack quite as much as I've gotten away with into their 20" (actual 21") carry-on model. Which leaves me to question whether I want to deal with checking baggage every f-ing time. Is there ever any leniency by which you can get a 25" or 26" on board?

Flying blows.

It's the same thing in Eastern Europe. I travel over there a bit and my carry-on luggage is always weighed.

They only weigh it cuz they want to make sure you're not smuggling Boris' radiated gold bars.
