Does anybody know what became of these two wonderful shops, that used to be in Fulham, London?

Both seemed to disappear without a trace. Customer service could be rather brusque, at times. But the stock was second to none...

Saxby, a crook, wound up in jail. Don't know his current disposition.

I can't remember, exactly. I read somewhere that fraud and possibly tax evasion was involved. I might be wrong, though.

Hello Mr style after 50! So I actually met Mr Saxby by accident. He is currently running a vintage clothing shop in Sheffield. As you would expect, full of tweeds. I was unaware of his standing when I met him. Did some research and he was jailed for tax evasion in the sum of £400,000! His reasoning to me about moving was that Sheffield is cheaper and his words “I hired employees, not children” so I guess he decided not to pay their pensions! Seems a lovely chap though, transgressions aside.

He was rather a staple at the juncture between classic menswear and rete-chappist culture. He ran a number of successful shops but he committed VAT fraud, IIRC, and that is taken quite seriously, here in the UK (as opposed to property crime against individuals and the lesser forms of violent crime).

Many conmen are. That's how they succeed in conning people.

Let me be clear: Saxby is a crook. While he was still operating his store in Fulham, I commissioned a waistcoat from him, at his suggestion, as his standard make did not fit me well. He was going to send me photographs of various cloth options and have the waistcoat made in a week (before I returned home). That never happened. Eventually, he sent me one photo, long after I'd returned to the States. I asked for more options. Then a waistcoat showed up at my house. It was not a custom waistcoat, but one of his standard ones and therefore too short. I sent it back and asked for a refund. I waited and waited, made several more requests without response. Eventually, as I had paid by Visa, I reported the matter to Visa and it became their problem. I got my money back and later I heard that he wound up in jail, quite appropriately.

Do not be conned. Avoid Saxby. He is not a lovely chap.
