M-O-M. The 'CHAV' book is not really about Chavs. It's about, as its subtitle suggests, 'the demonisation of the working classes'. A good book. Saw the author on telly after those London riots a year or so back. Only a young lad, but he was excellent in a rather confrontational interview.

Thanks. I realise that. I was only saying we could have done with something of the same order back then, at the time we were all getting vilified in the media by people who knew ****-all about us. [Mind you, when we did get interviewed we tended to take the Mickey Bliss anyway!]

I remember the one time that we had a Journo approach us,we were very abusive towards him.We did not want to appear in Papers etc.We had no interest in what the outside World thought of us.As soon as Skinheads appeared in Print(showing the Fashion or telling about the Aggro etc.,) we were gone.Only watched the Telly a couple of times during the Week so I never saw any Programme about Skinheads(if I did I still would not have watched it).The rest of the time,we were out or in the converted Attic Room we had made into our Den-playing Records etc.

The Internet will continue plundered.
These guys posing like on a popular book cover (dated 1973). Guess what book it is.

This is an interesting web site (especially for M-o-M): http://members.multimania.co.uk/paynesphotos/
I have seen some of these pictures already here and there on the Internet. I hope you will find something new. Some pictures show a female skinhead style like this:

A further example of a female skinhead haircut (1970):

Cropped hair but skinhead (1968)? However, a lucky guy!

For all its faults, the closest that we came to a contemporary record that wasn't merely sensationalist newspaper reporting or complete sociological claptrap was The Paint House.

I haven't read the Stanley Cohen book 'Moral panics and folk devils' (which was based on his PhD thesis around 1970), but it is generally considered to be a classic of its ilk. It was originally about Mods and Rockers, but the book has been revised several times to include skins and others. I suspect it's infinitely better than the poorly-informed trash penned by Dick Garbage. Sorry, Hebdige.

Skinhead '68? Absolutely no problem. IMO it easily started in late '67. By '69 the newspapers, television, politicians etc had recognised the phenomenon, but they were latecomers to the party.

Yes. I remember that in 1968 we actually considered it to be a term of abuse.

Also bought a pair and i'm having the turn up sewn.

So am I and having two inches taken of the leg length. I have to say the fit is very good. First ever trousers I have bought in H&M.

On the subject of 'bargains' my local TK Maxx has a good selection of new season long sleeve shirts by Polo RL at present and a smaller range of polo shirts.

Just been reading Mercs Write-up about the Company. They state that they started up in 1967(by which time I had stopped going to Carnaby Street),they also state that in 1970,Suedeheads went to Merc,Carnaby Street-to buy their POW Suits,Dog Tooth Trousers and their Brogues and Loafers. Now,I would like to ask any 60s London based Skin/Suedehead,did you go to that Shop?Because personally speaking-I never went anywhere near there to buyClothing.Or did I miss something? :)
