Gill Evans talks about her and Del going to London from Birmingham on a Saturday to pick up the latest gear.

I picked that up too, and wondered whether it would spark any comments about the influence of the Capital.

I recall my old mate 'Cockney Bob' (I have to put quotes round that, because he was from Thornton Cleveleys originally!), when he moved from London to Manchester he used to tell me that kids would listen, completely enrapt, when he talked bout London fashion etc. "Yeah... go on... yeah..."

Very interesting piece. The guy mentions the exclusivity of his playlist - I wish I knew what was on it, so I could see what tracks I recognised but had forgotten all about.

Thanks Ed !This list should get you started MOM.It does not include much of the Motown or Atlantic played.
Willie Tee and Jimmy Radcliffe were played in the clip along with a couple of others.

Thanks to the Central book for this info.

Great list that you could buy blind, though Micky Lee Lanes "Hey Sah- lo- Ney" always made me squirm !
Much of this list very much mirrors my own collection, and though I was too young to ever attend the Wheel,it shows the influence it had throughout the North and the Midlands,as this stuff was never heard on the TV or Radio back then.I stopped going to Soul clubs around '72-'73 so I have no real knowledge of much of what was played later.I would expect everything on here would be played in the "Oldies Room" at events today.I have purchased a number of compilations (mostly Kent) over the years, and a lot of stuff was new to me-some great and some bad.

This picture brings a question to the Originals.
Superposition of (casual) jackets: that was something we did a lot (at least here) in the 80s. A Jean jacket over a Harrington, or a Harrington over a Jean jacket, a bomber (MA-1) over a Jean jacket, a Leather jacket over a Jean jacket, etc.
Was it something you did in the 60s (i don't speak of weather conditions but of "the look" of course) or was it an 80s habit ?

I often saw denim jackets under Sheepskins or Macs. Never over a Harrington? Much later (80's) under MA-1's.

I did wear in the 80s, from time to time, a Levi's denim jacket over a Harrington, as my Harrington was very cheap and thin... But it was more common the other way around as on this 1982 Mikkel Rude's picture (left).

Thanks, an interesting list. I am familiar with a good number of the tracks, had some of them on 45s, have many of them now as mp3s. From what I recall of my days 'oop north', there was a heck of a lot more mainstream Motown/Atlantic/Stax played in clubs, and far fewer obscure 'northern' tracks, than people now seem to want to admit. Having said that, I do recall tracks like - say - Robert Knight's 'Love on a Mountain Top' being played, tracks that went on to be thought of as 'Northern Soul'.

Never saw it either in the late 60s - it would have been at odds with the super-sharp look we were trying to create.

I have said before that the 1980s had a big influence on me sartorially but I never could embrace the layered look. Even some of the more trusted shops would show models with (working outwards) white t-shirt, BD, piece of knitwear, denim jacket, outer jacket of some kind plus scarf and gloves - a bit much for a mild October day in London I thought.
