"Italian way" of necktie tying?

Hey guys, I'm sure many of you have seen The Sartorialist's new column in American GQ and he mentioned the man was wearing the necktie the "Italian way", back of the tie longer (i.e., thin part of the neck tie longer). I always thought people did this as a mistake or store displays on mannequins to make the tie knot really thick. Has anyone else ever heard of a such?

I've seen it (on the Sartorialist and elsewhere). I think it looks silly or an attempt at "dishabille" that's a little too contrived.

Looks sloppy, and sounds like something a department store salesman would tell you when you say the tie's too long.

It's Italian insouciance like the tie outside the sweater or sunglasses at night.

Don't forget sandals with a suit. I think this one takes the cake as being a little silly. I'll have to try the tie outside the sweater. Though, if you are going for a messy/flashy/just got out of bed/the world is too boring kind of look, then I think this method might work quite well. certainly doesn't work past age 35 I don't think.

When I went to Europe a few months ago the new way of tying a tie was to use an Italian knot, no longer a full windsor though it still seemed popular in London.
I use the Italian knot sometimes. It is just a four in hand but instead of going around once and then putting the blade through, you go around twice and then put your blade through BOTH. It his a nice look I think.

I think what you are describing is commonly known as the Prince Albert. Many men all over the world use this knot (including myself).

I'll have to try the tie outside the sweater.

Similar but not quite. I can't find a pic right now, I'll have to take a pic when I get home. Basically you do the prince albert but after you go around the first time [top center pic] you put your finger underneath to create a loop, then you go around again with your finger still underneath. So at the center row, center pic, you now have your finger and a loop with TWO layers of tie. When you feed the blade back through, you feed it behind BOTH layers of tie. Getting the knot tight takes a little bit of practice, but it is a very nice look I think.

I guess I wasn`t doing the Prince Albert then, because I feed my tie through both layers like you described.

It doesn`t look that bad because he has hot chicks on each side which balance the look of the tie. Take away the chicks and it`s a completly different look.

Many knots there, I have tried doing that diagonal one, no clue how on earth anyone gets it to remotely resemble the picture.
