Embrace the domestic. You are missing out on some of the best sartorial pleasures!

I love shining shoes. I don't love ironing, but I do it so often that I can get a shirt done in 5 minutes.

Either that, or find a laundry and a shoe-shine guy.

It is very easy to have these services performed by a dry cleaner and shoe repair shop/shoe shiner. Some dry cleaners can even perform shoe shining services; two birds with one stone. It may not be the best job, but it is better than looking shabby.

Other than that just learn to do the work.

I pay $27 per shirt. Each one takes approximately 2 days.

in stitches is pretty realistic - that's kind of what I'm doing now, having a lot of suits, to spread the damage around, although a better solution would be to have fewer suits, more carefully picked and cared for. Maybe one day, after I teach myself calculus.
Thankfully, the super polished look is not for me anyway, and also thankfully, I work in academia where just wearing real shoes, pants and shirts seems to be sprezz, so the bar is pretty low. There is a sweet disheveled spot between polished and standard academic disaster, which I hope will be possible to hit by just stocking up on enough stuff to keep the hobo look at bay

What are you doing in academia that is destroying your clothing?

Good question! Maybe I'm too anal to begin with, and a measures of sloppiness will bring me to the level of just right. In any case, all I do all day is sit, shift on a chair, rub my elbows on the desk, wave to other people in the hallways - hard labor
smile.gif
, then go , home and lay on the couch (suit still on), and hand around the house, prepare a drink or a snack (picking up a few dog hairs in the process), and then plopping the suit on a chair (rather than brush it and hang it), which also often results in wearing the same suit a few days in a row - just because it's right there, next to the bed
frown.gif
.

So, overall, nothing too destructive, but the cumulative effect of the above lazy bum practices makes all my of my suits decidedly non-crisp
devil.gif
. Oh, and I've already given up on ironing most shirts (OCBDS).

Overall, I like the idea of just hiring a housekeeper

Unfortunately, I can't afford a butler, and it ain't 1950 no more to outsource these operations to the missus, so I wonder what to do:

1) Continue treating nice clothes like crap thereby causing their premature death

2) Think of alternative style options -->if so, what are the options for a lazy bum who doesn't want to look like one?

Well you are just like me with one exception I cant stand a non-crisp shirt or pair of trousers (so I do ironing). Its only stuff, I wear my clothes to trash em. Most of my clothes get ruined because I smoke and little holes appear. Im so mistreating I accidently put a suit in a washing machine with the obvious results

That is a very flawed logic. You are not getting paid on your time at home. Unless you are paid 24-7. So the time you spent ironing in no way takes away from your income. You are not getting a deal and earning more money by not ironing. You are simply spending extra money.

Surely some SF member in NY would be willing to handwash and iron mr. booth's shirts for $25/per.
