How to Shorten a Belt [pictorial]

Use pliers to hold the "keeper" of the screw? (Sorry, my hardware lingo is below par.)
OK, I couldn't quite get a grip on it but maybe with some finer nosed pliers. I'll let you know how it goes!

Sorry I know this is a really old thread. Is this an option when the belt has rivets rather than screws - a la Ace Western belts? This is still something a shoe repairman should be able to do, correct? @Gus any experience here?

They will usually cut it to the right length then sew/stitch it rather than use rivets.
