Hey everybody,

This is my first post on this forum. First off, thank you so much for having me here. I’m eager to learn more about style and absorb your wealth of knowledge, and one day hope to be able to contribute back to the community.

My question is, I just purchased an expensive pair of shoes (Berluti). I attached a photo of them on me to this post. I really don’t know when I should and shouldn’t wear them. I know shoes are meant to be worn, but when shouldn’t I wear them?

For example, I’m on a train right now heading to a major city for work. It’s my daily commute. It’s going to downpour later today. I’m wearing the expensive shoes for the first time.

Did I just make my first mistake? Do you have a checklist you could provide me with that I can follow to ensure I keep these shoes lasting their longest (besides just simply not wearing them - I plan to wear these often). I’m not even familiar with conditioners and things like that.

Thanks so much everybody.

Brett

welcome!

- shoes are meant to be worn. Just don't wear the same pair every day; let the leather dry between wears. This usually means having at least 2-3 pairs of shoes that you can rotate.
- rain is okay, just use shoe trees and let the shoes dry completely before wearing again. never use heat -- leather will dry and crack
- use shoe trees!
- keep uppers clean; use a shoe brush after most if not all wears. Should take no more than 15-20 seconds.
- condition every few wears or when the leather looks dry (e.g. Bick 4, Venetian shoe cream).
- minor scuffs may come out with just brushing, otherwise use a little cream polish (e.g. Saphir Medaille d'Or) for -- less is more.

If you can get swims, it'll be helpful. I keep a pair of rain boots at my desk in case the weather goes crazy. If you have the space, highly recommend this approach. Also good for when it ice storms instead of snows and you forget your lunch.
