Not sure I'd go as far to say the Stone Sentinel is 'just as good' as a CG coat, but certainly when you compare the price of that coat to say a similar CG model with respect to look (the Constable) the SS wins for price and value. Constable still gets the nod for ribbed wrist cuffs and overall nicer looking coat IMO. But I totally see the sense in just buying a cheaper coat that should keep you just as warm. On top of that, CG is overpriced at retail IMO and it's going to get worse next season.

Canada Goose can be found on sale for a little more than a North Face SS. I found a CG Merino Wool Chilliwack Bomber Jacket (this particular jacket is discontinued by CG but it was sold 3 years ago) on GearTrade last year for $235.00. Original Street Price was $700! I never pay full retail price any more for jackets and coats!

I would rather have fake fur due to the fact the animals are skinned alive in China for their fur. I don't support that trade. Barbaric.

Unless you buy a fake one, the fur has never been to china, all their furs are native Canadian animals (Coyote).

Canada Goose Policy on the Humane Treatment of AnimalsCanada Goose is deeply committed to the preservation of our global environment and the humane treatment of animals. As an authentically Canadian company, the environment and ethical treatment of animals are central to our values. We consistently make commitments based on these values that guide the ways in which we do business. We recognize that because we use animal products in our garments, questions may arise regarding these commitments and our practices. It is important to us that our position on these matters, as well as the reasons for and nature of our company’s use of animalproducts are made widely available.Since we have been producing Canada Goose products, we have used both Coyote fur in the manufacture of our parkas and jackets. From the beginning we have closely examined and considered the use of these products from both an ethical and conservationist perspective. We are firm in our belief that these ethics are sound.

We use Coyote fur only as absolutely necessary, and exclusively for functional purposes. Our jackets are–and always have been–used in the coldest places on earth. In such climates, where skin can freeze in an instant, the coyote fur creates a warm environment in the most critical area–around the face. The warm pocket of air keeps exposed skin warm and ensures that exhaled air does not freeze. It is for precisely this reason that the technologies of centuries past used fur for protection against the extreme cold. Today we are able to use as little fur as possible, while maintaining the critical functionality of this sort of product.

The fur that we do use is acquired in the most humane ways and we adhere to the guidelines of the Fur Council of Canada that governs fur use in our country.

The fur industry is an excellent example of an industry based on sustainable use. All the furs used by the trade are abundant. Absolutely no endangered species are used. In the Canadian fur trade, government wildlife officials and biologists ensure responsible use by establishing controlled hunting and trapping, harvest quotas, licensing, and training courses. Strict government regulations ensure that
these quotas and seasons are respected.

Canada Goose strictly adheres to all such industry and government guidelines. More importantly, we take pride in the fact that by supporting this sustainable industry we are also supporting the native Canadian communities of the North and their centuries-old ways of life that are now being threatened. These communities are ethical in their fundamental approach to hunting: We strongly identify with the value systems of these communities, and make a commitment that carries over to the way we do business: Canada Goose does not buy fur from farms of any sort – ever.

The environmental benefits to using a natural product are clear when compared with the use of synthetics that are sometimes described as an “ethical” alternative to real fur. Many anti-fur advocacy groups fail to take into account the environmental impact of the production of synthetic fur. The chemical by-products of this production process have the potential to do more harm to the environment than the use of the fur from animals that are hunted as part of an ancient way of life that balances the needs of people and wildlife.

There are never simplistic solutions for complex problems. We are proud of the principled, responsible and humane approach that we consistently take in making our products. Nonetheless we recognize that there are some who oppose the use of animal fur under any circumstances. In stating our views and practices, we hope to promote the kind of transparency and context that will inform a reasoned discussion, one that moves beyond the shrill finger-pointing that often characterizes both sides of the debate. Good corporate citizenship requires openness and a willingness to listen to all sides on the
issues that affect us all.

Think it all depends on the animals, if they're killed and skinned to be eaten, fur is a by-product, like leather.

I'm sure a few people would have a right to get upset about garments made from say giant panda fur.

The Inuit peoples of the Arctic make anoraks of fur. While Westerners nowadays look on wearing fur as luxury, in extreme climates for human beings it can mean the literal difference between life and death. I have no objection to the ethical use of animal products for human survival - whether that is in eating them or in wearing them. In fact I endorse it!

GearTrade rarely has CG gear on sale in sizes Medium and Large. I know because I've kept a close eye on their site in the past months. Also you purchased that coat used, which is fine, but plays a big part in being able to find it for so cheap. You won't find a new Chilliwack bomber for less than $350 at retail online. And that price alone is extremely rare.

In general NF goes on sale a lot more often than CG in present day.

You found a 2 year old used coat for $235, congratulations. If one actually does the math, $700 in BNWT condition is actually just about right.

Mine was Extra Large. The Merino Wool shell attracts hairs like crazy, which is probably why CG discontinued it. I agree though a new Chilliwack Bomber in good to excellent condition is very hard to find on sale these days.

Its three years since they made this particular model. Nylon inner, DWR treated Merino Wool shell. It was sold in good condition with no rips, stains or tears. The Extra Large size seems to layer well on my 5'7" 150 lb frame. I'm very happy with it and it seems like it was made to fit me.

With the temps warming up, my desire to seek out discounted CG gear is fading. I just wanted to pass along the links I was using to scan for discounts. Most are American retailers. Also last week Amazon was having an outerwear promotion. If you signed up for their outerwear email subscription, then you could get 20% off a full priced CG coat that Amazon sold directly (not the orders Amazon fulfills from Paragon Sports, etc). Might be worth checking out.

Here are my links. Good luck.

For you bigger guys, Bloomingdales.com has a Yorkville bomber, XL for $205 and a Citadel, XXL, for $250, on sale. Both are black.

You know, I find it sad how CG will not allow US companies to ship CG to Canada in order to protect the prices/profit.

CG never goes on sale in Canada and people are more than willing to $595 + 13% tax for a Chilliwack well before winter begins.

I got a US company to ship to me last winter, when they had it on sale.

But the stupid Customs guy charged me duty on it, and even though I sent in paperwork to get it refunded, haven't heard back anything. It ended saving me just about $50 over the Toronto price, with taxes included.

As I stated last winter, CG has inflated their prices for this upcoming season. At this point they are slowly inching towards Moncler territory. The Chateau retailed for $495 at its debut in 2009 and will now cost you $695 at retail this season.

I strongly suggest a different brand as a way of not supporting these crazy price increases.
