(I really have no idea what they make--this is a total guess.) It would be hard to build a wardrobe of Kiton on that (it might even be foolhardy on 5 times that). Do the salesmen get steep discounts? Do they spend a disproportionate amount on clothing? Do they wear cheaper brands?

I make considerably less than that but still wear my fair share of Bergdorf Goodman level clothes (Zegna Couture, Incotex, Hickey Freeman for Bergdorf). I'm sure the salesmen get big discounts, and have first dibs on sales items, though perhaps their discount may not apply in that case.

I think the best-dressed salesman at the nearest Nordstrom hooks his suits up at Express.

Maybe when are constantly surrounded by clothing you would rather spend your money on camping gear or cocaine or something.

My great-aunt lives in Palo Alto and her area now has a large amount of these ostentatious starter-castles in a variety of Faux-finishes and a bunch of unattractive Mercedes-Benz cars. It's almost like Napa, but without the alcohol to leverage the pain.

Perhaps if you stick to the finer vintages, the alchohol won't leverage the pain.

At many department stores, the vendors will give steep discounts for the salespeople in their departments to encourage the wearing of their garments on the sales floor.

Assuming that the salespeople at these stores don't make nearly as much money as their clientelle, yet are expected to look as good as them, how do you figure they have access to their high end clothing? Super steep discounts from the departments they work in? Are they required do you think to wear what they sell, at least in the higher end stores?

I agree that the Vacca folks tend to dress very well (I've seen this in their Madison Ave., Broadway and BH stores); I also find the RLPL folks to be pretty consistent. I've been lessed impressed with the folks at Borrelli (NY and SF) and Wilkes, (SF and Carmel) who, while clearly knowing what to do, sometimes appear to be holding back. (Indeed, the folks at Wilkes/SF can sometimes be so full of attitude as to be downright distasteful).

The Bergdorf staff also shines (how could you not when you work in the single greatest mens emporium in the nation), as do the folks at Kiton, and the GM of the BH men's store -- a truly original dresser.

Not best dressed, but quite the opposite. Check out the college guys manning the shoe department at Nordstrom's (Men's or Women's). You'll see slack inseams at least 4 inches too long.

I know Nordy's is not some high end shop but the girls generally dress pretty nice there.
