Whatever your perfect size is on the 5, do the same on the 1943. It feels a touch slimmer from ball forward but you should be fine. Obviously YMMV.

I'm a bit of a tweener - great in 11.5D in a McTavish, but a little tight and poor closure in a Strand that no size combination seems to fix without unacceptable tradeoffs. I'd like to get an E and D in the same room to try them on...

So they have to cut costs to keep production here, with well paid workers. And some little piping is an easy one to cut on their non - bread and butter shoes and show ownership they can up margins.

Some might say that the Carlyle, Macneil, and Leeds are bread and butter. At a minimum, they are dress shoes, and should have a finished heel. If you want to eliminate the piping on the Badlands and other jeans shoes, fine, but not these.

There is a reason 9x% of shoes are made in work camps in China. It's profitable. So they have to cut costs to keep production here, with well paid workers. So then why discount shoes from $395 to $275 4 times a year? It sets consumer expectations that your shoes cost that much, and there's no reason to ever pay retail. I'd rather pay more and get the piping. I'm happy to pay retail most of the time, but they don't make me. Maybe most people are paying retail, but I have no idea and they aren't telling. But considering how well Alden and Carmina do, it seems like there's a good spot to come in beneath them but still not compromise QC and build quality.

My last two posts have been somewhat negative, so here's some appreciation. I love my walnut Rutledges.

They fit great, look great, and I got them off the bank for a steal!

I haven't paid more than half price for any of my pairs of Allen Edmonds. I found two pairs of new firsts on eBay for $140 and $160 (Six Avenue and Clifton), clearance MacNeil 1.0s for $197, and Shoebank pairs for $125 (Dalton and Elgin) , $147 (McGraw), $157 (suede Park Avenues), and $197 (Jefferson 1.0 and Dundee 2.0). Oh, and Chester wingtips for $15 at a thrift shop. I only started buying Allen Edmonds in 2013, so I can't comment on how their quality compares to the old days, but I have basically paid Johnston & Murphy or Cole Haan prices for every pair in my closet. And they've been sizes that few other manufactures make, or at least keep in stock. Considering how it's virtually impossible to get Alden and Carmina at discount, I'm happy to continue to buy Allen Edmonds, even if the piping is less than ideal.

It's that line at the top of your shoes by the ankle, aka that dark line that looks like a little pipe. I'm going to use an "interesting" shoe to demonstrate.

A piece of leather that gets folded over the edge of the opening of the shoe that that it looks finished, rather than having the raw leather just end.
