Well played Atleti.

Cue the "Barça in freefall/crisis/distress articles"

Barcelona Athletico was a hell of a game. Hats off to Athletico for what I thought was a well deserved and well played win.

I was curious if there's a way to quantify Arsenal's return on investment in terms of Champions League performance, maybe you guys can offer some insights on how to do this. Basically looking to score performance based on how far teams went, and sticking to comparable budgets (as of 2016). Point system is basically win = 6, finalist = 5, semis = 4, quarters = 3, knockout round = 2, group stages = 1, and 0 if not in the tournament.
Team value in 2016 (based on Forbes, in millions of dollars):
# Arsenal 1307
# Atletico 436
# Dortmund 182
# Inter 439
# Juve 837
# Milan 775

700

I specifically picked 2006 to include Arsenal's finals appearance. This is a bit shameful, since some of these teams didn't even participate in the CL for most of this period, and Atletico are still in it this year so may end up higher. Wonderful return on investment

^ I would think that the value of a team would be correlated to how much it won, so that's probably not the best way to normalize CL appearances. Total spent on salary over the time period (or perhaps salary plus net transfer fees) might be a better way to measure the returns.

It's really hard to find accurate information of transfer costs and salaries as often the media publishes purported but not correct sums, and the clubs don't really let you peak at their books. I went by value as a representative of potential spending power surrogate, reflecting how much they can pay for transfers and salaries. Of course this doesn't work all the time, Arsenal with their value have maintained a near net-0 transfer sum over the past decade (based on purported incoming and outgoing figures) as they capitalized on stars or just fleeced other clubs while paying top players far less than other big clubs. Oh well

Is Arsenal's value somewhat inflated with respect to the other teams due to having and owning the most modern stadium in that group? Any comparable figures on other clubs, particularly Barca (because they are Barca) and Bayern Munich (because they, too, have an enormous new stadium, right? though I don't know the ownership aspect of it).

this is probably true to some extent, i'm not sure how assets figure into this since now it's paid off. so in that case, barca and bayern have such massive values (3 and 2 times arsenal, resp.) that it skews things in our favor. but we can also look at revenue, and that paints a different picture. what's funny is that some portion of our revenue is due to having the highest ticket prices in the prem. meanwhile these other teams are doing as well if not better over the years while in some cases not even participating in the CL. i just can't see why we justify keeping wenger when other managers could take us as far if not farther given our resources.

wenger is already preparing the same excuse from every transfer market: "there's nobody to buy."

Dat Totti equalizer though...

Yes, Barça coming unhinged is making La Liga supremely interesting. They'll still probably win it, but the drama is what makes the sport great.

winning la liga won't be easy anyway, and doesn't head to head favor atletico ? on paper madrid have the hardest run-in but it seems ronaldo may have woken up from his slumber (by his standards)

Barça and Atleti are equal on points, but Barça has the lead on head to head matches between the two.
