I know that FIH is a self releasing tie. I highlighted the part in your quote that I didn't agree with. A Windsor knot is self releasing and a half windsor can also be self releasing (depending on where you start the loop in second stage).

full windsors are often tied poorly, giving the general knot type a bad name.
many ties are too thick to do a full windsor nicely, ie symetrical and a little full, but with a thick tie it ends up being huge (see first point)
this forum is a little USA skewed so the FIH is preferred. Also works better with OCBD's.

I've been a half windsor knotter all my life. Thought I suspect the FIH is most used because it supposed to be easier and a no- brainer. And a big plus for the FIH, is that it is uneven and non-symmetrical, so that, when leaning half over on the the bar rail late at night, it looks even.
Though to open a can of worms. A lot of the pictures I see on this site of guys with spread or semi- spread collars, and the FIH tie knot, not covering the collar openiing, look crappy.

It boils down to personal preference, personal history, how you were taught to dress by your father or whoever - just like anything. There are those who think less of those who tie a Windsor knot. I am one of them.

It was not until I hit Styleforum that I even learned to tie a four-in-hand. My father taught me how to tie a tie, and I always assumed he'd taught me the FIH, being a middle management type.
It turns out, though, he had taught me the half windsor. I still favor it as my knot of choice. I really do think it's a nice knot.
I do occasionally tie a FIH or a Shelby, however, depending on the tie and collar.
