However, I'm curious to hear from the European members here if their local "rules" conflict with some of these English/American rules. ... But what about the French, Germans, Russians, Dutch etc? Where is their aesthetic derived from, and do they have similar rules?

There is one thing I am aware of: White tie is worn differently in continental Europe (or at least in Austria). Vests are supposed to extend half an inch beyond the jacket (or harmonize with the shirt cuff) and many continental tailors I know would refuse to cut a vest differently.
