Normally, a golf umbrella will have a straight handle and a much larger canopy. Did you mean the shape of the handle? Or the shape of the canopy?

How do you find the Smiths compare to the Briggs?

They are very different styles of umbrellas. The James Smiths are thick and heavy; they are not for the weak wristed. The Briggs however are thinner and more elegant.

Notice the amount of taper from the handle to the shafts:

The Smiths have two fasteners for rolling up the umbrella:

Visiting the James Smith shop in London is a great experience. There are hundreds of umbrellas to choose from and they cut the umbrella to your specified length while you wait. I also think the Smiths are less expensive than the Briggs.

Some pictures from my last visit there:

I used to live about two blocks away from Smiths for a semester in college. Naturally I had no real appreciation for the place at the time, but it definitely is one of the coolest looking storefronts in London.

Think I will make a pit stop there next time I'm in town (which unfortunately is not often enough).

It's maple. Canadian maple. At least that's what the SAB guy told me.

I wouldn't say so, my Fox is much lighter weight that low-end umbrellas of the same size.

This cane would be anachronistic in today's times but a truly wonderful piece.
