Mine is clothing made in China/Indonesia/India etc. Something about the thought of the clothing I am wearing is made by a child in a sweat shop is just horrible.

It seems that its very difficult to avoid as many many shops and designers use these countries. As of now, I am trying to stick to: USA, Italy, Switzerland, England, and Canada. I THINK these are ok.

What is yours, and what is your take on clothing/accessories made in sweat shops?

You're forgetting the simple fact that the Chinese depend on our demand for goods to build their economy through such unglamorous jobs. As undesirable as that job is, it beats unemployment. If your argument is a quality based one that's fine. I'd prefer skilled laborers too. To answer your question, whatever this look is. Also overtly feminine menswear.

I thought this was going to be a thread about peeves concerning wearing clothes. Instead it's another bash thread by someone who really doesn't have a clue about the sweatshop industry. Better add Italy to your list.....

You'd rather that the children be unemployed and resort to selling themselves?

Fashion pet peeve or style pet peeve?

Fashion pet peeve would indicate that I follow the fashion trend, or at the very least care about them.

That's not true, because I've no fashion sense, and only a sense of style left over from the 1600s.

I cant stand people that use designer names/logos as avatars or user names. I also hate it when people put brand logos as their computer wallpaper.

Have you ever considered that avoiding products created by child labor may mean that the children making these products and their families may be out a meal?

I'm from Vietnam. The fact is that if not for the sweatshops, tons of kids would be on the streets stealing stuff, joining gangs, prostituting, etc. Of course, we all want them to be treated and paid better but it sure as hell beats the alternative. I haven't been back to my country much but I've heard the condition of sweatshops has gotten better.

Yes, I have thought about the fact that these children would be doing much worse things if they didn't have these "jobs". I read in Harpers Bazaar that in China, they bind legs of children who work in sweatshops so that they won't run away! Now you all tell me. Do you think those kids are better off being tortured and made to work more than 15 hours a day for a few cents?

I am from India, and have seen how children are exploited in many many ways. They grow up on the streets begging for money because they are forced to, not because they have an option. Do you not think that going to school would be a better option? If any of you have seen the movie Slumdog Millionaire, you know exactly what I am talking about.

There is no good answer to any of this, I know. But for the last year, I have stopped buying clothing and accessories that are made in the far east. It is very difficult because so many things are made there. I will prefer to pay more for something made in Italy or the US. Yes, it is a matter of quality and other things as well. One store I have stopped buying from is Banana Republic. While some of their clothes may be nice, they are practically all made in China.

As for the Versace comment. My Versace collection consists 95% of neckties. These are all made in Italy. The other percentage are a few pieces of Versace black label clothing and belts, which are all also made in Italy. So if you have any other snide comments, send me a message and we will discuss it privately.

Shouldnt people be focused on changing the situation over there rather than coping with it?
