Texas has some awesome bouldering (and one of the biggest bouldering competitions in the world) and great huecos. You son is the the perfect age to start. I used to spend hours climbing every day while i was in my teens. It's the best hobby ever, I just wish I still had time for it.

Pardon my ignorance, how long does it take to accomplish such a hike up that mountain? Were there others attempting the climb?

On Thanksgiving, we modestly accomplished a 3 mile hike up and down deep ravines... with a very courageous 4 year old. The prospects of finding caves kept him going.

That's awesome Kai. I take it you're more in to ice than rock. Kinda weird for a Texan, no?

I never took to ice climbing. I don't like the cold. I was a very good rock climber when I had the time to climb every day though. It's depressing now because whenever I go I can only climb at a tiny fraction of my former abilities. Come to think of it, I wonder if my landlord would allow me to turn the second bedroom in to a bouldering cave?

Depends on a number of things: age, fitness level, acclimation to the altitude, weather. The rangers quote a time of about 4 hours each way, although that's pretty conservative. We did it in about two and a half.

A number of other folks were on the trail that morning, many taking advantage of holiday/vacation time around Thanksgiving. For hiking destinations in Texas, it's a pretty popular place.
