Just snagged a pair of Alden BB Color 8 tassels from ebay - they look to be in decent shape but I might send them away for some TLC before putting them into the general rotation

Is there a general consensus as to whether or not it is preferred to send shoes back to the Alden factory or an independent like Aram? One of the benefits seems to be Aram will do diff soles and change the welt, etc...is there any notable benefit to having Alden do the work?

Primary advantage is if the uppers need work. There may be a small price advantage but it is more than offset by turnaround time, lack of customization, etc. But if the upper need repainted, I would not hesitate to use Alden.

Mrs. smfdoc says I have too many shoes. She may have a very tiny kernal of truth in that statement. I was looking through prior photos to find a specific one and I suddenly thought "Oh, I had forgotten I had those." To justify their existence they were located and worn today. 6 eyelet reverse chamois chukkas.

Plain toe oxfords, not bluchers. Bluchers are not formal shoes. Or, patent oxfords. Or opera pumps in patent or black leather. Worst case, cap toe oxfords with a nice shine on them.
