As for back pockets, I think trousers look incredibly odd without them.

Good lord, wouldn't pants with no back pockets look like women's pants? I wouldn't even risk it. even if you elect not to use it (but...where would you keep your hankerchief? back pocket is the perfect place for it), nice to know it's there.

+1. I agree on both counts.

Sounds nice.

Sounds so simple but I can imagine how it will turn out and it should be great.

Flap pockets?

Thanks, I hope it turns out well. Yes, flap pockets--straight.

Two more thoughts: does the fabric allow you to wear the trousers with odd coats, or without coat casually? If so, the case for retaining rear pockets is stronger.

Also, based on what I observe about your personal style, you have a nod to American trad...this tells me that, over time, you might be troubled with a choice to lose the pockets even if you were to like it initially or enjoy its comparitive novelty.

I'm with ed on this one. Back pockets are the only constant of all of my outfits, so they give me a habitual place to put my wallet, which is important if I'm not going to forget things.

Plus, to my eye, trousers without back pockets, particularly worn with suspenders, look incredibly weird and feminine. It's just how I see it.

Somebody posted a picture here once, maybe of Thomas Mahon, in suit trousers with no pockets and suspenders and it was just creepy looking.

I think the cloth is probably too formal for a typical pair of odd trousers. I'd probably wear them exclusively with the jacket; anyway, I don't want to wear them out prematurely.

Well, I certainly don't want to do anything for the sake of novelty, and although I like some (or many) styling cues and attitudes associated with 'American Trad', I don't feel beholden to any of its rules. I think the pockets can be added later--can anyone confirm?

Who's going to notice? If you're having a bespoke suit made, clearly you intend to wear the coat as well? I can only think of a handful of times you would leave it off, none of which your behind would be visible in all it's glory by anyone.

Security checkpoint at an airport?

Still, I'm a bit surprised at all the hand-wringing over lack of rear pockets. Creepy? "I wouldn't even risk it"? Are there deeper issues here?

So I found the picture that so distressed me. I'd forgotten that the trousers were fishtail as well as pocketless, and I think the former is what made them look so odd.

Also I guess it's something to do with Beaman rather than Mahon.

Where would you put the rear pockets on those pants? I can't visualize anywhere they'd look okay.
