Seems like the scuffing problem is worse with wax.

And it pains me even more given the nice mirror shine the shoes take with wax polish.

Not in my experience. If the wax is shined really well and feels completely dry to the touch, friction doesn't cause scuffs like it does on a shoe polished with cream.

And I say this as a person who doesn't like a high shine on my shoes in most occasions.

I'm not sure you're reasoning, pB, but I spoke with fritzl about the stuff at length a few years ago and he was insistent that it should be used sparingly. I use Saphir conditioner regularly (let's say once every 20 wears or so?) and that seems to do the job, but I only use Reno 2-3 times a year and that's when things are looking particularly dry or beat up. Aside from that I just do the usual brush after wearing, trees, dust bags routine.

Worth noting that I rarely shine my shoes, and if I do it's with cream.

Essentially I don't think it is much more than a solvent heavy neutral polish. There's some solvents in it that give it the creamy texture and stuff, but I think that degrades the leather when used like people tend to do: too much and on the vamp of the shoe. Essentially I have had many pairs of shoes go in the garbage that saw nothing but love with this stuff and other Saphir products. Shoes that I have had since before Saphir was really a thing are in better shape than newer reno loved shoes that went kaput. Some shoe maker's I have also spoken with have said similar things about reno.

I do think it has a great use, however. I still use it just on toe and heel quarters of my highly polished shoes. A small dab about a half the size of a pea, swirling it around a bit and a buff brings back a high shine. It essentially to me is a finishing product, not a conditioner. If the solvents in the wax on your shoe has dried it picks it up and also deposits some more solvents to renew the finish. Slathering it on the vamp of your shoes I think is bad and my experience says that is the case.

I mentioned this in the shoe care thread, but FWIW, I had a pair of Saint Crispins destroyed with too much Reno. The top layer of the leather kind of rubbed off.

I still use it, but very, very sparingly, and infrequently. I mostly use AE conditioner and cleaner, TBH. Not very sexy, but I feel safer and more confident with it.

Well, anything with solvents are going to take color and finish off of crust leather (which is a lot of Saint Crispins offerings). Crust leather has no finish and relies of dyes and polishes hand applied. Anything that disturbs that will be noticeable.

I use to use it quite often, it does wonders to soften stiff leather. I have stopped due to all the talk about the detriment of solvent cleaners.

Now I'm simply using the AE leather lotion, no Reno now a days. It simply adds moisture back to the leather...
