Was conversant in French a few years ago, but mostly lost it when I picked up Russian. Working on Croatian at the moment.

Decent French - secondary school
Latin and Greek - secondary school
Schrecklich Deutsche - factory floor
poco Italiano - tourist
Spanish comprehension - from French and Italian
liga Ellenika - marriage
agus ni'os mo' na' cu'pla focal Gaelinn - primary school system

basically I can say 'I don't speak your language' in seven languages, and then understand what's being said about me

You too?!?! I knew about the Japanese, but I also speak fluent gibberish. I even told my fiance when we started dating, "Gibberish is my first language."

Japanese - 2 years of college classes, I am gonna study ****** off the next 2+ years in Tokyo

German- 3 years of high school, damn near lost it all now. I try to think in German and it comes out in Japanese.
Spanish - 2 years High School, same deal as my German.

From the very little I have learned so far... Yes hyeren chem hasgunare. Which means "I don't understand Armenian" (it's literally "I Armenian (the language) am not understanding." If you really are interested a great help for me in learning has been the Pimsleur books on CD, I got it off Amazon.

I know that there are a lot of Irish Pubs in Netherlands but I'd rather go to Antwerp. It's closer from where I live.

A couple of years back I was in Connemara taking in the scenery. Stopped at one of the very few stores/gas stations there and the people there only spoke Gaelic, so I presume it is spoken as a primary language there among natives...I can imagine that being a hike for you though...Good luck with that.

I suspect that they may have been teasing you a bit -- there are no monolingual Irish speakers left, so these lads probably did know English even if they pretended not to!

The Connemara Gaeltacht is (I think) the biggest, and owing to its proximity to Galway city, it has a higher proportion of young/cool Irish speakers (for example, on the Irish language TV station TG4, they all speak in Connacht Irish -- South Park has even been dubbed into Irish).

Then again, we've got a fair few down here in Munster -- especially in Kerry and on the Dingle (An Daingean) peninsula. Although, even the name of the town is controversial -- see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingle
